Exciting New Youth Theatre Class Coming to Marion’s Lincoln Theatre

Marion, Virginia – If you’ve got a young theatre enthusiast at home, some exciting news is coming your way! The Bristol Academy of Music is about to bring an incredible opportunity to the youth in the region with a brand new theatre class at the historic Lincoln Theatre in downtown Marion.

Starting next week, kids from Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee will have the chance to enroll in a theatre class that promises to be both fun and educational. Spearheaded by opera singer and experienced music educator Rachel Helton, this new initiative is set to culminate in a production of “Aladdin Jr.” in early 2025.

Registration for the class begins soon, and rehearsals for “Aladdin Jr.” are scheduled to start on Tuesday, September 3rd. The program will welcome kids aged 8 to 18, providing them with a stage to showcase their talents and develop invaluable skills.

A Dream Realized

Helton, who has seen the lack of opportunities for children’s theatre in the region, decided it was time to make a difference. “I have observed the lack of theatre opportunities for kids in Southwest Virginia. After the success of our summer theatre camp at the Bristol Academy of Music’s main studio in Bristol, I thought, why not expand it?” Helton shared.

Her collaboration with Bob Watkins, the executive director of the Lincoln Theatre, has paved the way for this exciting program. Watkins was enthusiastic about the idea and believed it would be a great addition to the community.

Benefits Beyond the Stage

The benefits of theatre go beyond just performing. Helton remarked, “I have seen the transformations of children that become involved in our classes and theatre. They build confidence, develop speaking skills, make great friends, work as a team, and can celebrate bringing a show from script to stage! It’s a positive, uplifting experience!”

Indeed, these skills are life-long assets. For kids who have a passion for theatre, being part of a production like “Aladdin Jr.” is more than just fun; it’s a confidence booster and a great learning experience.

Inclusive and Supportive Environment

Understanding that not every family can easily afford such opportunities, Helton has ensured that financial constraints do not hold anyone back. The academy has partnered with FAME Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships for kids to participate in music classes and performances.

“FAME Inc. helps us involve more students by providing scholarships for those in need. We want to make sure every child has the chance to experience the magic of theatre,” Helton added.

How to Get Involved

If your child is interested in being part of this exciting venture, you can find more information and register by visiting the Bristol Academy of Music’s official website or by sending an email to the academy. The academy is welcoming all kids who are excited about the world of theatre to join and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Rehearsals for “Aladdin Jr.” will be held weekly at the Lincoln Theatre, and the shows are scheduled for January 17 and 18, 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity for your child to step into the spotlight and become part of something truly special.

This new theatre class is more than just a class; it’s a doorway to new friendships, skills, and a sense of accomplishment. It truly is an opportunity every child should have. With Rachel Helton’s expertise and the enthusiastic support from the Lincoln Theatre, this program is bound to be a hit and could mark the beginning of a brighter future for youth theatre in the region.
