WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. — A notable shift towards renewable energy is taking place in Southwest Virginia as a proposed 250-megawatt solar project known as Wolf Hills Solar is expected to power around 42,000 homes if accepted.
While the project is still in the early stages of planning, the project developer, Catalyst Energy Partners, aims to create a hybrid power plant. The proposition is to use solar power during daylight hours and resort to natural gas power when solar energy is unavailable. The proposed Wolf Hills Solar Project is set to be situated in the vicinity of the Wolf Hills Power Plant within the Bristol Industrial Park. The project plans to utilize the same infrastructure that the power plant employs to distribute power to the power grid.
The development of the solar project carries the promising prospect of job creation. According to Steve Malnight, President of Catalyst Energy Partners, construction spanning an estimated 18 months to two years will employ over 300 people. Malnight has expressed great enthusiasm for the project, stating that the initiative contributes to progressing Virginia as an energy-focused region.
Involving the community and getting their feedback is a key element in the planning stage of the project. Open houses have been arranged for the public to learn more about the Wolf Hills Solar Project. The dates for the open houses are Thursday, May 30, at John S. Battle High School, and Thursday, June 13, at Patrick Henry High School.
As per the project timeline, Catalyst Energy Partners is scheduled to approach the planning commission at their June meeting. The meeting will provide detailed insights into the proposed project and begin the approval process for the required permits. The goal for the Wolf Hills Solar Project is to start producing power by early 2027.
This shift towards solar energy underscores the growing trend and emphasis on renewable energy sources. A successful implementation of the Wolf Hills Solar Project could spur similar initiatives in energy-focused regions looking to transition into cleaner and more sustainable means of power production.
Rising concerns over climate change and environmental degradation are turning the focus towards renewable energy solutions. As such, the Wolf Hills Solar Project is predicted to contribute significantly to this broader energy shift, marking a significant stride in Virginia’s renewable energy plans.
For more information regarding the proposed Wolf Hills Solar Project, citizens are encouraged to visit the open house events or directly reach out to Catalyst Energy Partners and local governing authorities.
