Homeowners in Washington County, Virginia may soon find their energy needs met by the sun. A 250-megawatt solar project known as the Wolf Hills Solar Project is being considered in the county. The ambitious project intends to use the promising power of the sun to supply clean, renewable energy to 42,000 homes.
The Wolf Hills Solar Project, if given the green light, will be located adjacent to the existing Wolf Hills Power plant situated in the Bristol Industrial Park. The project would take advantage of the power plant’s existing infrastructure to connect to the power grid. This strategic use of already in-place systems not only facilitates the installation but also cuts down on costs and construction disruption.
The project’s developer, Catalyst Energy Partners, intends to create a hybrid power plant that combines the solar energy generation during daylight hours with natural gas power during overcast periods and nights. This consistent power supply model aims to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity to homes in Washington County.
In addition to providing renewable energy, the project could create over 300 jobs during its construction phase, which is expected to span 18 months to two years. This potential for job creation significantly heightens the importance of the project, especially in the context of bolstering local economies hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Wolf Hills Solar Project is in the early stages of planning. The development team awaits the planning commission’s June meeting for project details disclosure and permitting approval. Once granted, the aim is to have the solar power plant fully operational and producing electricity by early 2027.
To enhance community understanding and gather public feedback, project authorities have planned two open houses. The first open house is slated for May 30 at John S. Battle High School, while the second will take place on June 13 at Patrick Henry High School. This gives the community an opportunity to learn more about the project and share their views.
The proposed Wolf Hills Solar project, if successful, could not only provide thousands of homes with renewable energy but also become a beacon for sustainability in Virginia. This step towards green energy positions the state as a forerunner in clean energy solutions and stands as a testament to Virginia’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
