West Bath Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Educator and Community Figure

It is with heavy hearts that the community of West Bath remembers Edward L. Larrabee Jr., a cherished educator and community leader, who passed away on March 16, 2025, at the age of 84. Ed, as he was affectionately known, left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered during his long and fulfilling life.

A Life Rich with Learning and Service

Born on December 2, 1940, in Bath, Maine, Ed Larrabee always had a passion for education. Growing up in Bath, he attended local schools and proudly graduated from Morse High School. Continuing his academic journey, Ed earned a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Maine at Orono. He dedicated several years of his life to teaching high school mathematics in Maine, inspiring countless students to develop a love for numbers and problem-solving.

Service to His Country

After his time in the classroom, Ed took a different path and bravely served in the Army. Stationed in Huntsville, Alabama, he specialized in statistics and computer programming for missile systems. It was in Huntsville that he met and married his beloved wife, Mary Nell Morris. Together, they would build a wonderful life filled with adventure and love.

A Career Full of Achievements

Post-military service, Ed’s career expanded into the world of engineering where he worked as a Quality Assurance Engineer for several esteemed companies. These included household names like Chrysler, Raytheon, Newport News Shipbuilding, and Westinghouse, to name a few. Ed’s attention to detail and commitment to quality earned him certifications as a Certified Quality Engineer and a Certified Lead Auditor. His work took him across various states in the South, where he cultivated friendships and professional relationships that would last a lifetime.

Family Man and Community Pillar

Ed and Mary built a beautiful family, living in multiple cities including Bristol and Yorktown, Tennessee, as well as Knoxville and Chattanooga. Throughout these years, Ed was not just a father, but also a devoted community member. He participated in his children’s activities, coaching soccer and supporting scouting endeavors. His passion for family was evident to all, and he maintained close ties with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Stephen Larrabee, daughter, Katherine Larrabee, and grandsons Noah and Benjamin Freemerman.

Returning Home to West Bath

In 2003, after enjoying a fulfilling career, Ed retired and returned to his roots in West Bath. Here, he built a home along the scenic New Meadows River in Sabino. With his love for the great outdoors, Ed dove into hobbies such as sailing, boating, gardening, and long walks. He was actively involved in the community, serving as co-treasurer and trustee of Bath United Methodist Church and engaging with the Sabino Recreational Association. Community suppers at Sabino Hall became a highlight, where he connected with fellow residents.

A Legacy of Love and Kindness

Ed’s generous spirit extended beyond his immediate family. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary, his sister Barbara Larrabee Hill, and several nieces and nephews who carry on his legacy. His parents, Izetta and Edward Larrabee, welcomed him into the world, and though they have since passed, Ed’s memory will continue to shine bright within those he leaves behind.

Final Farewell

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during a visitation on Saturday, March 22, at Daigle Funeral Home in Bath, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A memorial service will follow at Bath United Methodist Church later this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bath United Methodist Church, 340 Oak Grove Ave, Bath, 04530. Online condolences can be shared at www.DaigleFuneralHome.com.

As we bid farewell to Ed, let us remember the warmth and love he brought into our lives. His spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
