Local artist Joseph Maye will create a vintage-style postcard mural on the side of Eagle Center Antiques, reflecting the city’s cultural heritage and values. Community feedback is welcomed to incorporate local ideas into the design, with installation planned for late spring 2025. This initiative aims to blend art, history, and community pride in a memorable way.
Elizabethton is buzzing with excitement as the city embarks on an artistic journey with a brand-new mural project that promises to bring a touch of vintage charm to its downtown area. In collaboration with Main Street Elizabethton, the city has chosen the talented local artist Joseph Maye from Hexagoat Art to design a stunning mural that showcases the city’s unique culture and spirit.
The mural is set to grace the side brick wall of the beloved Eagle Center Antiques, located at 507 E. Elk Ave., perfectly positioned at the intersection of E. Elk Avenue and Armed Forces Drive. This antique shop is a local treasure trove, featuring over 40 different vendors who offer an eclectic mix of antiques, vintage items, and art. Not only will the mural beautify this iconic location, but it will also serve as a vibrant backdrop that reflects the history and character of the shop and its surroundings.
This exciting project is made possible through funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Rural Arts Project Grant, demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting arts and culture in smaller communities. The mural will take on the beloved form of a vintage-style postcard design, which is sure to resonate with locals and visitors alike, making it a memorable addition to the downtown landscape.
The mural is designed to highlight various local cultural, physical, and symbolic references that honor Elizabethton’s rich heritage. It will embody themes of friendliness and hometown pride, two concepts that are at the heart of the community’s values. This design aligns beautifully with two of the four key themes that guide Main Street Elizabethton’s initiatives: nature and heritage. Previous art projects like “Tracks of the Wild” by Ernesto Maranje and “History in the Making” by Caitlin Maupin have underscored these themes, and this new addition will further enhance the district’s artistic offerings.
Excitement is building as the mural is expected to be installed and dedicated in late spring 2025. Keep an eye out for details about the mural’s unveiling, which will be shared on Main Street Elizabethton’s social media platforms. Make sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram at @DowntownElizabethton for the latest updates on this wonderful project!
Elizabethton is on the verge of something beautiful, blending art, history, and community spirit in a way that will undoubtedly bring residents together in appreciation of their hometown. Stay tuned, and let’s get ready to welcome this incredible mural to downtown Elizabethton!
