This Friday, November 15, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) will come together to honor our nation’s heroes in a heartfelt Veterans Day celebration that promises to be both moving and memorable. Taking place at the Veterans Memorial at 3:45 p.m., this annual ceremony is set to recognize the hard work and sacrifices of military veterans, including ETSU’s own students, staff, and faculty who have worn the uniform.
The program will be marked by some significant moments. ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland is set to deliver remarks that are expected to resonate with everyone in attendance. The audience will also hear from Col. Matthew Skaggs of the U.S. Army Futures Command, who will share insights honoring the military’s impact on our society.
A solemn roll call will be conducted for ETSU ROTC alumni who were killed in action, giving everyone an opportunity to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony will include a wreath-laying ceremony performed by the Color Guard, and the touching bugle call, Taps, will be played in tribute. Adding to the ambiance and heartfelt atmosphere, music performed by the Department of Music faculty and the University School Choir will serenade attendees.
In the event of bad weather, the celebration will be moved indoors to Brown Hall, ensuring the ceremony can proceed regardless of the elements.
After the ceremony, there’s more in store for our veterans! From 5 to 7 p.m., all veterans and military service members are invited to a complimentary dinner at the ETSU Dining Hall, located on the third floor of the D.P. Culp Student Center. This delightful meal is being hosted by the ETSU Office of Equity and Inclusion in collaboration with Sodexo, showcasing the university’s commitment to supporting those who have served our country.
To partake in this generous offer, veterans can pick up a free meal ticket at various locations throughout the campus. The dinner is open not just to ETSU veterans, but also to faculty, staff, students, and community members, inviting everyone to join in expressing gratitude and respect for our heroes.
ETSU has a rich tradition of serving military veterans and their families, exemplified by its continued status as a Military Friendly® institution. The university has dedicated resources to assist veterans in various ways, from providing support for education to helping them launch businesses. This Veterans Day event is just one of the many ways ETSU shows appreciation for those who have bravely defended our freedoms.
For those needing additional assistance or accommodations during the event, the ETSU Office of Disability Services is available for support, ensuring that every veteran can fully participate and enjoy the day.
The stress of daily life fades as we gather to share in this important occasion. Veterans Day is not just a date on the calendar; it’s a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many to protect our freedom. So, whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or a friend, come out and join your fellow community members at ETSU this Friday. Let’s take the time to honor and celebrate those who have given so much for us all.
