Two Arrested after Authorities Seize 42 Pounds of Meth in Sullivan County

Authorities have arrested two individuals in Sullivan County, Tennessee, after discovering approximately 42 pounds of methamphetamine, estimated to have a street value of over $1.1 million, inside a vehicle during a routine traffic stop.

Arrests and Seizure Details

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office reported that on the morning of Wednesday, Mark Anthony Trent, 37, and Saundra Kay Hamilton, 51, were taken into custody following a traffic stop on Interstate 26, near mile marker 8. The vehicle in which the narcotics were found had initially attracted the attention of authorities due to speeding.

To assist in the situation, a K-9 unit from the Kingsport Police Department was requested. The dog signaled the presence of drugs inside the vehicle, prompting a thorough search by the officers. The ensuing search uncovered a stash of 42.13 pounds of methamphetamine.

Further Discoveries Beyond Meth

Beyond the large quantity of methamphetamine, the deputies also reported finding numerous drug-related paraphernalia, a scale, a loaded handgun, ammunition, and over $5,600 in cash. The discovery of these ancillary items suggested potential involvement in a larger drug trafficking operation.

Charges Against the Arrested Individuals

Following the arrest, Trent was charged with speeding, violation of the registration law, manufacture, delivery, sale, or possession of methamphetamine, unlawful carry or possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun during the commission of a dangerous felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hamilton faced charges of manufacture, delivery, sale, or possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

As of now, both individuals are being held without bond in the Sullivan County Jail. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 26.
