BRIDGE, the regional economic development organization, was unable to secure necessary approvals from local governments in time for a tight deadline set by an interested airline. Despite the disappointment, local leaders remain optimistic about future air service opportunities and the vital role the airport plays in the regional economy.
In a bit of disappointing news for the Tri-Cities region, a proposed expansion of air service at Tri-Cities Airport has fallen through due to some tricky funding delays. BRIDGE, the regional economic development organization based in Kingsport, recently announced that their exciting plans to bring an airline aboard have hit a bump in the road.
Last week, BRIDGE representatives sat down with an interested airline to discuss the potential for expanding service at the busy airport. However, things didn’t go quite as planned. During the meeting, it became clear that the airline involved had set a tight deadline for funding approval. To be precise, they wanted everything squared away by Friday. This left BRIDGE with little time to round up the necessary funds from the six local governments that own the airport.
The airport’s ownership is quite a collaborative effort, with localities from both Tennessee and Virginia involved. The six owners include Bristol (Tennessee), Kingsport, Johnson City, Bristol (Virginia), Sullivan County, and Washington County. With all these different governing bodies needing to agree on the funding, it’s no surprise that BRIDGE deemed the time limit insufficient to get everyone on board.
BRIDGE had already been proactive in reaching out to local leaders in Kingsport and Bristol to discuss potential funding solutions for the air service expansion. Just a day after the airline’s deadline was communicated, a presentation was made to the Johnson City Commission about the deal. Local governments showed apparent willingness to consider the proposal, indicating they are committed to careful management of taxpayer dollars as part of their decision-making process.
Even with this setback, it’s essential to recognize the critical role Tri-Cities Airport plays in the regional economy. It serves as a vital link for travelers, businesspeople, and tourists alike. The airport is not just a gateway for flights; it’s an economic driver for the entire area. Local leaders and stakeholders are hopeful that the airport can secure future expansion opportunities that will benefit everyone involved.
Despite the current disappointment, the conversation around air service expansion remains alive. BRIDGE continues to seek ways to engage with different airlines and find opportunities to enhance the airport’s services. The commitment from local government officials to explore future proposals suggests that there’s still a lot of interest in making air service more robust in the Tri-Cities area.
In the coming months, as local leaders continue to evaluate options, one can only hope that the region’s dedication to fostering a thriving economic environment will lead to good news on the air service front.
For now, it’s a wait-and-see game, but community leaders remain optimistic about what the future may hold for Tri-Cities Airport and its ability to expand air service!
