Tragedy Strikes on the Watauga River: Fisherman Drowns After Falling Off Kayak

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. – A sorrowful incident occurred on the Watauga River Monday morning, leading to the tragic drowning of a 31-year-old fisherman. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) reported that the accident happened around 9 a.m., roughly half a mile downstream from Wilbur Dam.

The unfortunate event took place as two men were enjoying a fishing trip. Both fishermen hit unexpectedly rough waters, which caused their kayaks to capsize. While one man managed to swim to shore and call for help, the other was sadly not as lucky. The man who reached safety dialed 911 immediately, but it was already too late for his companion.

Rescue teams from the Carter County Rescue Squad and the Carter County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to the call. By about 10:10 a.m., they had recovered the fisherman’s body. It is a heartbreaking reminder of how important it is to always prioritize safety, even when engaging in enjoyable outdoor activities like fishing.

The TWRA confirmed that the victim was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the accident. This small piece of equipment could potentially have saved his life, highlighting the crucial role it plays if trouble arises on the water. As of now, authorities are withholding the man’s identity until all family members have been notified.

Following this incident, the TWRA reported that this marks the 15th boating-related fatality for the year, underscoring the need for both new and experienced boaters to always be prepared and cautious. Furthermore, the significant number of fatalities serves as a stark reminder that water safety should never be underestimated.

Rough waters can quickly turn a calm day into a dangerous situation, and it’s essential for everyone to be aware of the weather conditions before heading out. In addition, wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device and knowing your own limits are key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

Safety Tips for Boaters and Kayakers

In light of this tragic accident, here are some safety tips to keep in mind when heading out on the water:

  • Always wear a life jacket: No matter how confident you are in your swimming abilities, wearing a personal flotation device can be a lifesaver.
  • Check the weather: Conditions can change rapidly, so it’s essential to stay updated and avoid rough waters.
  • Let someone know your plans: Inform a friend or family member about where you’ll be and when you plan to return.
  • Stay within your skill level: Ensure you possess the skills necessary for the water conditions you’ll be navigating.
  • Keep essential gear handy: Items like a whistle, flashlight, and first aid kit can be incredibly beneficial in an emergency.

As this community mourns the loss of a loved one, it’s an opportunity for all outdoor enthusiasts to reflect on the importance of safety measures while enjoying nature. The TWRA and other local agencies continue to encourage the public to take all necessary precautions to ensure fun and safety go hand in hand when participating in water-related activities.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragedy. Let us honor their loss by committing to safety and preparedness on our own adventures in the great outdoors.
