Tragedy Strikes on the Watauga River: Fisherman Drowns After Falling Off Kayak

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. – A sorrowful incident occurred on the Watauga River Monday morning, leading to the tragic drowning of a 31-year-old fisherman. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) reported that the accident happened around 9 a.m., roughly half a mile downstream from Wilbur Dam.

The unfortunate event took place as two men were enjoying a fishing trip. Both fishermen hit unexpectedly rough waters, which caused their kayaks to capsize. While one man managed to swim to shore and call for help, the other was sadly not as lucky. The man who reached safety dialed 911 immediately, but it was already too late for his companion.

Rescue teams from the Carter County Rescue Squad and the Carter County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to the call. By about 10:10 a.m., they had recovered the fisherman’s body.
