JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — A routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug bust this past Saturday when law enforcement officers found over 13 grams of methamphetamine in a vehicle. The Washington County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) reported that deputies were keeping an eye on the area around East Unaka Avenue and Duke Street when they noticed a car with a loud muffler that had mismatched license plates.
The driver, identified as Mark Coffey, 47, was quickly flagged down by the deputies. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Coffey’s driver’s license was suspended. As if that weren’t enough, deputies decided to bring K-9 Sheba into the mix. This smart pooch performed an open-air sniff around the vehicle, which led to an alert on the driver’s side door, indicating the potential presence of illicit substances.
Once they had this alert, deputies wasted no time in searching the vehicle. What they discovered was alarming: 13.62 grams of a white, crystal substance that they suspected to be methamphetamine. This find led to multiple charges against Coffey, including possession of meth, driving on a suspended license, along with charges for financial responsibility and a loud muffler.
After his arrest, Coffey was transported to the Washington County Detention Center. He didn’t stay behind bars for long, though, posting an $11,000 bond just three hours later. Despite his quick release, he’s now facing serious legal troubles.
It’s incidents like these that remind us of the ongoing challenges regarding drug abuse and trafficking in the area. Authorities are continually striving to maintain safety on the streets, with regular patrols and traffic stops being an essential part of that effort. With the holiday season approaching, the blackout of illegal activities is crucial for keeping families safe during what should be a time of celebration.
As the community continues to juggle the ups and downs of daily life, staying informed about local news, crime updates, and safety tips is ever more important. Make sure you’re aware of your surroundings and ensure that you report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement.
While Johnson City makes headlines for various reasons, incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the important work that local law enforcement does every day to keep our streets safe. Although Mark Coffey may have walked away on bail, the implications of his actions—and those like his—echo loudly throughout our community. So, let’s all keep our heads up and stay informed as we navigate through whatever else keeps coming our way!
