Theatre Bristol Set to Bring Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” to Life on the Paramount Stage

Bristol, Tenn.

In an ambitious and adventurous theatrical endeavor, Theatre Bristol is ready to transport its attendees from the stage to the sea with its upcoming presentation of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”. The rowboat is ready for its passengers, the golden harp awaits its musician, and the cast swings between life on land and under the sea – evoked by the power of imagination and Disney magic.

Earlier, during a full-dress rehearsal, around 40 cast members prepared and polished their performance for the grand opening at Paramount Bristol. Glenn Patterson, an experienced director with previous works like “Fiddler on the Roof” and Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” under his belt, is leading this colossal production that scheduled to open on Friday, June 7, and run through Sunday, June 16.

A Challenging Production

The production team is faced with numerous challenges in bringing Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” to life on stage. Samantha Gray, the producer of the show, mentioned it is one of the toughest shows they have ever done. Straddling between the land and the sea and presenting the intricate sequences of events, is a monumental task. However, the music harmoniously bridges the gulfs of difficulties, facilitating the sharp transitions.

“Under the Sea”, the Academy Award-winning song from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” reverberates through the choreographed chaos. The essence of each character becomes subtly noticeable as the tropical music flows, through the rhythm and the harmonized symphony of the actors, the wooden floorboards seem to melt away to assimilate the cool, blue sea.

The Little Mermaid: A Revamped Tale

The riveting tale of “The Little Mermaid”, originally written by Hans Christian Anderson in 1836, has been reimagined by Disney to encompass a more uplifting trajectory. Theatre Bristol’s rendition of the tale will see Rebecca Bolick portraying the lead character of Ariel, the mermaid, who falls in love with a human named Prince Eric, played by Zaiah Gray. Mike Musick brings to life the character of King Triton, Ariel’s overly protective father, and stirs the calm waters with his vehement objection to Ariel’s love for a human.

The play showcases a poignant portrayal of the father-daughter relationship, and it serves as a tearjerker for many, according to Samantha Gray. Even though honing such a grand production came with its challenges, the cast and crew firmly believe that the enchanting story of Ariel and her struggles will resonate with the audience and make their efforts worthwhile.
