Exciting Events Lineup Awaits at Sycamore Shoals State Park

Elizabethton, TN – Mark your calendars for a vibrant weekend at Sycamore Shoals State Park! If you’re looking for some historical fun and interactive activities, this coming weekend is packed with events that promise to deliver both.

The Tennessee Sons of the American Revolution will kick off the festivities on Saturday, September 14, at 10 a.m. with their annual gathering at Fort Watauga. This year’s event will be especially momentous as it celebrates the 244th anniversary of the Gathering at Sycamore Shoals. Participants will honor the triumphant Overmountain Men and their victory over loyalist forces at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The occasion will feature a memorial service and a ceremonial wreath laying to pay tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of these historical figures.

As you explore the grounds, you’ll encounter the Fall Knap-In, also held at Fort Watauga on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For those not in the know, knapping is the age-old craft of making stone tools. This event serves as Sycamore Shoals’ celebration of Tennessee Archaeology Week. Skilled artisans will be on hand to demonstrate the delicate art of shaping arrow points, spear points, and various other survival tools used in ancient times. In addition to these craftspeople creating stone tools from scratch, you’ll be treated to mesmerizing demonstrations of bow and arrow and atlatl throughout the day.

And the action doesn’t stop there! On Sunday, shift gears and get ready to dance as the Sabine Hill Society sponsors an afternoon of English Country Dancing. From 1:30 to 4 p.m., the Visitor’s Center will be transformed into a lively dance hall reminiscent of early 19th century America. Don’t worry if you’re a newbie or don’t have a partner; this event is designed for all skill levels. Seasoned dancers and beginners alike will find the activity both enjoyable and educational. So, dust off your dancing shoes and step back in time to partake in this delightful cultural immersion.

What makes these events even more appealing is the fact that admission is completely free. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a crafts lover, or someone looking to learn a new dance, there is something for everyone to enjoy at Sycamore Shoals State Park next weekend.

Other local happenings that might catch your interest include the Smith Family Reunion on September 8, or for those with a musical bend, there’s karaoke and dancing at the Sunshine Market.
