In a highly contested election, Angie Stanley, Todd McKinley, and Mark Vicars have emerged as the triumphant winners in Sullivan County’s Board of Education Republican primary races.
Angie Stanley, a former county commissioner and the owner of a beauty salon situated in Colonial Heights, has all but cemented her position on the Sullivan County school board. She prevailed over Carrie Carpenter by securing 68.3% of the total votes.
Stanley asserted, “I’m just so honored the citizens of Sullivan County have faith and confidence in me to be a voice for education.” Carpenter, a librarian at Volunteer High School, was not available for comment on Tuesday night.
Newcomer Todd McKinley achieved victory in a three-way District 5 primary race. McKinley, a military veteran active in military affairs, will now square off against independent incumbent Randall Jones in the upcoming general election slated for August 1st.
Mark Vicars also experienced success by winning his district as the sole District 3 GOP candidate. Vicars, a teacher in Hawkins County, is the only candidate who registered for District 3 and had no opposition in his district, solidifying his position on the Sullivan County school board.
In District 7, incumbent Mary Rouse will appear on the August 1 general election ballot as an independent. She currently has no challengers. Similar to Rouse, the only conceivable challengers for Stanley and Vicars would be independent candidates who declare their intentions to the Election Commission to run a write-in campaign at least 50 days before the general election.
The districts for the BOE primary races are numbered from 1 through 7, with districts 2, 4, and 6 set to hold their elections in 2026. These upcoming elections will remain crucial and shape the future of the Sullivan County school board.
In addition to the Sullivan BOE primaries, Sullivan County Assessor of Property, Donna Whitaker, secured 10,240 votes in her primary. She had no opposition and will not face any opposition in the upcoming August general election.
The results reported on election night are preliminary results and subject to confirmation by the Sullivan County Election Commission.
