Exciting New Solar Project Set to Power 42,000 Homes in Washington County, Virginia

Big Plans in Southwest Virginia

The community of Washington County, Virginia is looking towards a cleaner and more sustainable future with the proposal of an ambitious 250-megawatt solar project by Catalyst Energy Partners

Plans are still in the early stages, and the community gets the chance to find out more about this progressive move towards renewable energy sources.

“I think we have great potential to continue this as an energy region,” commented an enthusiastic local representative.

What is “Wolf Hills Solar”?

Dubbed as the Wolf Hills Solar, this innovative project is proposed to be located in the Bristol Industrial Park of Washington County, Virginia. Steve Malnight, the President of Catalyst Energy Partners, showed immense excitement about bringing a vital solar energy contribution to the region.

According to Malnight, this project is designed to contain approximately half-a-million solar panels capable of providing power to around 42,000 homes. Adjacent to the existing Wolf Hills Power Plant, this new venture plans to utilize the same infrastructure for interconnecting power to the power grid.

A Hybrid Power Plant Concept

Aligning with the current energy landscape’s need, Catalyst Energy Partners proposes a unique concept for this project – a hybrid power plant. This innovative methodology will assure the community gets solar power during the day and relies on natural gas power when the sun doesn’t shine.

“During the construction of this project, which will probably take about 18 months to two years, we will be employing over 300 people,” Malnight added, describing the benefits of this massive venture – employment to the local community.

Next Steps and Community Involvement

As the project continues its planning stages, Catalyst Energy Partners anticipates presenting detailed plans to the planning commission by the end of June, seeking project permit approval.

The community at large will have the opportunity to learn more about the Wolf Hills Solar Project at two planned open houses:

  • First Open House: Thursday, May 30, at John S. Battle High School, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
  • Second Open House: Thursday, June 13, at Patrick Henry High School.

Ashley Hoak, a local community member, encourages fellow Washington County residents to visit the open houses and learn more about the proposed project, “Participation and awareness are essential as we move towards a more sustainable future.”

Ultimately, the Wolf Hills Solar Project aims to start producing power by early 2027, marking a significant milestone in Washington County’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable living.
