Sevierville Welcomes Back Old Friends After 24 Years
Sevierville, a picturesque town nestled in the Smoky Mountains, recently played host to a heartwarming reunion filled with smiles, laughter, and a touch of nostalgia. Master Sergeant John P. Joslin, a retired USAF recruiter, and his wife, Kathy, welcomed Chief Master Sergeant Freddie Bradshaw, also a retired USAF veteran, and his wife, Dee, into their home for the first time in over two decades.
Back to Where It All Began
The story of this friendship goes way back to March 1971 in Johnson City when John recruited Freddie into the Air Force. Little did they know that this would spark a bond that would last through the years. After Freddie completed his training at Lackland Air Force Base, their paths crossed again 30 years later in Okinawa, Japan. What a remarkable coincidence!
During that fateful meeting in Okinawa, John had transitioned from military life to serving in the ministry after attending seminary. As fate would have it, he and Kathy were volunteering as missionaries at the Central Baptist Church in Urasoe City. Meanwhile, Chief Bradshaw was stationed with the 353rd Maintenance Squadron at the 353rd Special Operations Group at Kadena Air Base. The two old friends joyfully rekindled their friendship on the beautiful island.
A Memorable Retirement Ceremony
Fast forward a year, and Chief Bradshaw was ready to hang up his uniform after 30 years of dedicated service. During his retirement ceremony, Freddie made the moment special by introducing John to the attendees, saying, “I am going to make Air Force history today. I would like to introduce you to my USAF recruiter from 30 years ago, Master Sergeant and now Pastor, John P. Joslin and his wife, Kathy.” The room erupted in applause, and John and Kathy became instant stars in that joyous celebration.
A Plan for Reconnection
After Freddie and his family moved back to Elizabethton post-retirement, it didn’t take long for him to discover that his longtime friend John lived just a couple of hours away in Sevierville. A few phone calls later, the two families arranged their first reunion in more than two decades. It was a heartwarming experience filled with stories, laughter, and a deep sense of camaraderie.
Embracing the Good Life
Today, John serves as the pastor of Valley View Baptist Church in Sevierville, sharing his faith and love for the community. Meanwhile, Freddie enjoys the leisurely pace of retirement while cherishing the moments he spends as a grandfather. This reunion is a testament to the strength of their friendship, which has not wavered over the years. “We’ve been friends for 53 years now,” Freddie said during their heartfelt reunion, “and we plan to remain great friends for the rest of our days.”
