Remembering a Local Legend: James “Jim” E. Broyles
It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news about a beloved figure in our community, James “Jim” E. Broyles. Jim passed away peacefully at the age of 98 at his home in Bristol, Tennessee on Saturday, March 22, 2025. His remarkable life is a testament to the spirit and resilience of our nation, and his contributions to Bristol will never be forgotten.
A Life Well Lived
Jim was born on September 10, 1926, right here in Bristol. He spent his formative years attending Bristol Tennessee High School, where many remember him as a hard-working and spirited student. As the world plunged into chaos during World War II, Jim showed his bravery when he answered the call of duty, joining the Army and serving in the Asiatic Theater from 1944 to 1946. His honorable service extended to being part of the Occupation Forces in Japan, where he contributed to rebuilding efforts after the war.
After returning home, Jim traded his military uniform for a suit and tie, kicking off a successful career at Inter-Mountain Telephone Company in Johnson City. But the road didn’t end there; he partnered with his father and helped run the Broyles Gulf Station in Bristol for more than 40 years! Jim wasn’t just a hard worker, he was a well-respected member of the community, always stepping up to lend a hand. His dedication to his job led him to own and operate several service stations in Bristol for over 20 years, keeping his family name tied to the town’s cherished history.
Family and Friends
Jim was preceded in death by many loved ones, including his parents, Clifton G. Broyles and Mary Peters Broyles, his wife of many years, Betty Stone Broyles, and his siblings. However, his legacy continues through his two sons, James Edward “Eddie” Broyles, Jr. and Charles David “Chuck” Broyles, who, along with their loving wives, honor his memory. His sister, Kathryn Draper, numerous nieces and nephews, and his longtime friend Phyllis Ratliffe will deeply miss him, as will his faithful companion, a dog named Bandit.
Passions that Defined Him
Aside from his remarkable career, Jim was a well-known figure in the Ford V8 Club, where he served as both president and treasurer. His passion for antique cars was evident to anyone who crossed his path, as he poured his heart into restoring vintage vehicles throughout his life. Jim’s enthusiasm for classic cars was infectious, and many in the community will fondly remember the stories he shared about each vehicle’s history.
A Lasting Tribute
As we reflect on Jim’s extraordinary life, the family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which holds a special place in the hearts of many. A graveside service will be held to honor Jim at Glenwood Cemetery on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Vann Seal officiating.
