ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — Residents of Carter County, beware! The local Federal Recovery Center has temporarily closed its doors, but there’s a reason behind it — the weather!
As of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the Recovery Center located at 1749 Highway 19 East decided to close its doors to ensure the safety of both visitors and staff. Why? Because showers and high winds are on the way, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) put safety first! The center is planning to reopen around 1 p.m. Thursday, but only if the weather allows it.
For those of you who might not know, the center usually operates from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Mondays to Saturdays. It provides essential assistance to folks recovering from the tragic impacts of Hurricane Helene, which resulted in devastating flooding throughout East Tennessee. Communities and buildings were severely affected, leaving many people searching for support and resources to get back on their feet.
As we look towards Thursday, it looks like Mother Nature has her own plans! Showers are expected to roll in early, between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Before you know it, those downpours may impact your morning commute. Keep an umbrella handy and stay safe while on the road!
It’s worth noting that this closure is only temporary. The dedication to recovery in the community remains strong, and the center is eager to welcome individuals back. People in need of assistance can take comfort in knowing that services will resume as soon as weather conditions improve.
Let’s keep our spirits up and hope that the weather clears quickly. With consistent efforts from local agencies and organizations, Carter County is poised to bounce back from this challenging time. If you’re in the area and facing difficulties as a result of Hurricane Helene, don’t hesitate to make plans to visit the Recovery Center once it’s back open!
