Northeast State Celebrates Students at Annual Honors Convocation

The Northeast State Community College recently celebrated the achievement of its students during the annual Honors Convocation. The event took place on May 2 at the Ballad Health Performing Arts Center on the Blountville campus. The Program Area Awards for the year 2023-24 were also announced, recognizing exceptional talent across the college’s academic departments.

Divisional Winners

The recognition spanned multiple divisions and departments, celebrating diversity in education and student success. The winners in the various divisions were composed of bright minds with potential to contribute significantly to their fields of study. The Behavioral & Social Sciences Division was led by Rebekah Saulsbury for Communication Studies and included victories by Michelle Malone and Carlyn Biggs in the Criminal Justice Department.

In the Health Professions Division, leading achievers like Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Jackson Barrett and Cardiovascular Technology / Invasive student Kaitlynn Bowser were recognized. Similarly, the Humanities Division showcased the best in digital media and art with standouts such as Kymber Hooven and Kyndal Thomas.

Recognitions in the Mathematics Division saw Ashley Britt taking the top spot for Accounting, while the Science Division celebrated agriculture with awardees such as Laney Watson and Lillian Stallard. Within the Technologies Department, there were notable performances in Auto Body Collision Repair by Clarence Allen and in the Industrial Technology / Automotive Service by Ioane Moana.

Outstanding Student of the Year

Rebekah Saulsbury was also awarded the Outstanding Student of the Year by the Northeast State President Dr. Jeff McCord. Saulsbury demonstrated exceptional academic achievement as a member of the Northeast State Debate Team and is also a member of the President’s All-Academic Team, with a flawless 4.0 grade point average for all her coursework at Northeast State.

Adult Learner of the Year

Roan Hicks took home the Adult Learner of the Year Award. The accolade honors adult students who step up to the challenge of balancing responsibilities and academe, showing determination and excelling in their educational pursuit.

All-Tennessee Community College Academic Team Scholars

Students Jessica Green and Xander Pike were recognized as Phi Theta Kappa All-Tennessee Community College Academic Team Scholars. Phi Theta Kappa is a reputable national academic honors society for community colleges and being included in this esteemed group attests to an exceptional level of academic achievement.

President’s All-Academic Team of 2023-24

Finally, the college celebrated its President’s All-Academic Team of 2023-24, consisting of 58 students who graduated this spring with an impressive 4.0 grade point average. The convocation offered an opportunity to recognize and reward the perseverance and dedication of these students, who stood out for their outstanding academic performance.

The annual Honors Convocation has proved once again the prominent talent emerging from the Northeast State Community College. As it continues its mission to provide excellent education, the college awaits the future achievements of their student body in the academic year to come.
