Johnson City is buzzing with excitement as Milligan University gears up for its annual senior showcase, an event that highlights the hard work and creativity of its graphic design and interactive media design students. This year’s theme, “Pause,” encourages both the community and the artists to take a breather, soak in their achievements, and celebrate the journey they’ve taken during their time at Milligan.
The much-anticipated showcase runs from November 17 to December 3 and will be hosted in the Milligan Art Gallery located in Derthick Hall. If you’re in the area, swing by for the opening reception on Sunday, November 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. This event is completely free and open to everyone, so grab your friends and family for a fun afternoon filled with creativity and inspiration!
This year’s showcase features the creative works of four impressive seniors. You’ll get to see the stunning projects by Abbey Cartagena from Johnson City, Ashley Roberts from Kingsport, Nicholas Hensley from Erwin, and Kamdyn Lee from Kingsport. Each of these talented individuals has poured their heart and soul into their projects, reflecting their unique perspectives and experiences throughout their academic journey.
The title “Pause” holds a special meaning for the students. Nicholas Hensley explained that it reflects an essential moment for everyone involved to “take a moment and enjoy the work created during our time at Milligan.” With the hustle and bustle of deadlines and exams, it’s easy to overlook personal achievements. This exhibition is a perfect opportunity to step back, appreciate their craft, and celebrate their hard-earned accomplishments.
Ashley Roberts, not just a senior in interactive media design but also the President of Milligan’s Student Government Association, shared her thoughts on how the program has helped her grow. “My favorite projects have been those that invite me to solve a challenge in a new way,” she said, revealing her love for merging creativity with problem-solving skills she’s learned over the years. Her designs often tell a story, reflecting a uniqueness that she holds dear.
Abbey Cartagena also expressed her gratitude for the opportunities provided by Milligan. She believes the program has allowed her “artwork to bloom and flourish,” emphasizing that the university has played a significant role in honing the talents God has blessed her with. It’s touching to see how the students connect their faith with their creativity, showcasing a blend of academic pursuit and spiritual growth.
The showcase promises to be a visual feast! Visitors will experience a dazzling array of inventive projects that embody the heart and soul of each artist. The graphic design program at Milligan not only covers the essential elements of design but also prepares students for real-world applications across multiple platforms. Meanwhile, the interactive media design major gives students hands-on experience with design theory, motion graphics, and interface design, equipping them with critical skills for today’s fast-paced digital landscape.
Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a supporter of local talent, or simply curious about the creative works on display, the “Pause” exhibition at Milligan University is an event you won’t want to miss. Come out, enjoy the creativity, and celebrate the students’ commitment and passion! Let’s support our next generation of artists in their thrilling journey.
