About the Show

Created by renowned playwright Roger Bean, “The Marvelous Wonderettes” focuses on a group of high school seniors: Missy, Cindy Lou, Suzy, and Betty Jean. As they prepare for their graduation from Springfield High in 1958, these friends reflect on their high school experiences, navigating the ups and downs of young adulthood. The musical features iconic 1950s hits such as “Rockin’ Robin,” “Sealed With a Kiss,” and “Oh Boy!” Everyone will be humming along!

A Director’s Perspective

Director Alena Carhart, who also serves as an adjunct instructor of music, applied voice, and musical theatre, shared her enthusiasm for this production. “I was drawn to this production due to the timeless rock’n’roll music and the community it creates,” she said. “This show is equally funny as it is heartwarming, and it draws in all generations to see this feel-good show. Travel back to the 1950s, away from phones, and get your feet on the dance floor at this show.”

Meet the Cast

This talented cast is comprised of young performers who are eagerly stepping into their roles. Freshman Irie Manning from Etowah, Tenn., takes on the role of Missy. Senior Anna Shelton from Kokomo, Ind., will shine as Cindy Lou. Sophomore Hope Krell from Telford, Tenn., plays Suzy, while junior Ariana Floyd from Bristol, Tenn., showcases her talent as Betty Jean. Completing the ensemble is freshman Sallie Hatfield from Seymour, Tenn., who plays Chester and Swing.

The cast has embraced the camaraderie of the “Wonderettes,” and Carhart couldn’t be prouder. “They are a tight-knit group, so it’s been a joy seeing them bring these characters to life, ranging from the scholastic overachiever Missy to the witty troublemaker Betty Jean,” she shared.

A Collaborative Effort

The production has drawn on the talents of several individuals, including assistant director Mareena Rodriguez, who is also an instructor of music, applied voice, and musical theatre. Choreographed by Rebekah Knisley, another instructor of dance, and with music direction from Steve Sensenig, the musical talent is especially evident. The stage management has been skillfully handled by Ryan Jamerson, a senior musical theatre major from Limestone.

Additionally, the technical crew continues to add value to the production with the efforts of sophomore Ian Haagen, a theatre arts major from Johnson City, and Abby Tramel, a child youth development major from the same city. Their collective hard work will ensure an entertaining experience for all.

Don’t Miss Out!

This weekend promises to be filled with laughter and celebration, making it a perfect outing for families, friends, and everyone in between. So, grab your tickets, bring a friend, and get ready to be whisked away to an era of fantastic music and heartfelt moments with “The Marvelous Wonderettes Caps and Gowns ’58.” We can’t wait to see you there!
