Cross United Methodist Church Celebrates Bi-Centennial Anniversary
Blountville, TN – In a poignant event, the local congregation and guests donned their best attire to commemorate a significant milestone. The Cross United Methodist Church marked its 200th anniversary, a testament to its enduring presence and service in the Blountville community.
The Sullivan County Commission recognized this feat by declaring Thursday, May 16 as Cross United Methodist Church Day. This public recognition emphasized the importance of the church’s robust history and ongoing efforts in serving the community.
Charting Two Centuries of Faith
The Cross United Methodist Church embarked on its spiritual journey back in 1824. The first meetings were held at the old Snodgrass School building, which is situated northeast of the church’s present location at 689 Cross Community Road.
In 1875, heavy snowfall caused the school building’s roof to collapse, prompting the congregation’s relocation. They then moved to the old Cross School, where construction of a new church building commenced in 1914 and completed in 1920. The current church structure includes furnishings made from logs and salvaged wood from the former locations, linking the congregation’s past and present.
“We appreciate it,” remarked Rev. Doug Sorrell upon receiving the proclamation. “We just try to keep on keeping on.”
Governing Attention
The bi-centennial celebration of the Cross United Methodist Church was not the only matter discussed at the Sullivan County Commission. Local governance also took the spotlight, as the commission approved spending of up to $25,000 for roof repair and replacement of the Sullivan County Library in Blountville, validating the ongoing importance of local community services.
This allocation aims to remedy leaks caused by ill-installed dormers and ensure the Sanders Library continues to stand as a beacon for knowledge in the community.
