Boaters Flock to Sportsman’s Marina for Labor Day
Abingdon, Va. — The hustle and bustle at Sportsman’s Marina on Monday was a clear indication that Labor Day festivities were in full swing. The marina became a lively gathering spot for many families and groups ready to soak in the remaining days of the boating season.
Among the crowd was Brindy Haynes, who had a special reason to celebrate—a milestone 16th birthday. With a beaming smile, Brindy shared, “I’ve been wanting to for a couple of months now so I feel like it’s just to have a memory on my 16th birthday.” Her sentiment echoed the atmosphere of joy and togetherness, a hallmark of family celebrations on the lake.
For Kathy Asbury, the day was more than just a holiday. It was a tradition. “Memories are also what brought us to the lake,” Kathy said proudly. She went on to highlight the generational connection her family has with the marina. “Now our daughter and son and our grandchildren are here. They’re all over there cleaning the boat, getting everything ready for grandma to come aboard,” she chuckled. Marina owner Travis Richards took the opportunity to address the importance of being cautious on the water, particularly noting an unusual water level. “We’re about a month ahead of schedule so this is really an October 1st level,” he explained. With the lower water levels, boaters were advised to be vigilant. “With the lake being low, you definitely have to pay a little more attention to the markers and different things like that. Some rocks can jump out of the water fairly quick when the lake is as low as it’s been,” Richards added.
Despite the safety warnings, the excitement for the remaining boating season remains high. Richards reassured everyone, “We say a few opportunities but man, we have another six weeks of boating season… [it’s a] great time to come out, rent a boat and if you don’t have a boat just come out and take advantage of seeing the leaves. It’s a beautiful time of the year to come out.”
