KINGSPORT, Tenn. — A routine traffic stop turned into a significant drug bust in Kingsport last week, leading to the arrest of four individuals. It’s a story that highlights the ongoing battle against illegal substances in our communities.
On November 7, police were patrolling East Stone Drive when they spotted a vehicle driving suspiciously, straddling the line between two lanes. This prompted a traffic stop, and the driver, identified as Ashleigh Smile, 38, from Bristol, Tennessee, was unable to produce a valid driver’s license. That’s when things took a turn for the bizarre.
As the deputy engaged with Smile, a second officer arrived on the scene. This officer noticed something unusual: a small baggie, thought to contain an illegal substance, sitting right on the lap of Jeffrey Spencer Jr., 43, also from Bristol, who was a backseat passenger. At that moment, all four individuals in the car were asked to exit.
Meanwhile, the front-seat passenger, Amanda Lunsford, 42, again from Bristol, was seen tossing drug paraphernalia in an obvious attempt to hide it from the authorities. If that wasn’t enough to raise eyebrows, officers soon discovered a piece of aluminum foil—often associated with heroin—crumpled at the feet of two of the suspects.
What followed was a thorough search of the vehicle that revealed a haul of illegal items. Officers found methamphetamine, marijuana in individual baggies, a substance suspected to be heroin, 11 Suboxone strips, and a potent mix of prescription medications including Morphine, Oxycodone, and Hydrocodone. To top it off, they stumbled upon several ounces of illegal mushrooms—a clear sign that this group was up to no good.
The search revealed even more: drug paraphernalia, a loaded handgun, and brass knuckles. To think all of this was hidden away in one vehicle! Additionally, it was reported that Smile had packages of meth on her person as well. Just goes to show what people will attempt to carry around these days.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office did not hesitate in filing charges against all four occupants. Each faces serious allegations including manufacturing, delivery, sale, and possession of various Schedule I, II, IV, and VI controlled substances, along with more charges like possession of prohibited weapons and drug paraphernalia.
Specific charges were slapped onto Smile for not having a valid license and for driving unsafely, while Lunsford found herself in deeper trouble with charges related to tampering with evidence.
As of the latest updates, Spencer Jr., Lacey, and Lunsford remain in custody, each with a bond set at $25,000. Smile managed to make bail and was released the following day. It raises questions about how seriously we take these situations and what can be done to mitigate this troubling trend.
The incident illustrates the challenges local law enforcement face in combating drug-related crimes. With a vast array of substances being seized, it’s clear that efforts to keep our streets safe must continue unceasingly. So, let’s keep our eyes peeled and work together as a community to stay informed and alert.
