Annual LibCon Convention in Johnson City Unites Adventure, Creativity, and Community

Johnson City recently buzzed with excitement as the local public library hosted its yearly LibCon Convention. Taking place on Saturday, July 27th, 2024, this 6th annual event embraced an adventurous theme, inviting attendees to delve into a vibrant mix of activities ranging from vendor displays to electrifying karaoke sessions.

The convention is not just about the fun and games, though, as emphasized by Kip Polmanteer, the Young Adult Librarian. “A lot of people think of fandom conventions as kind of being just some fun nerd thing that we do but it’s actually about promoting literacy and community. Everyone who comes here ends up making friends. They get cool stuff, they get to see new people, artists, and they get to kind of explore the library as well,” Kip explained.

This year’s theme, adventure, was a hit among attendees, adding a layer of excitement and exploration to the overall atmosphere. Local vendors contributed immensely to this vibe, showcasing a variety of intriguing items ranging from handcrafted goods to unique artwork related to various fandoms. The vendor stalls were a treasure trove for attendees eager to discover new collectibles and support local creators.

The cosplay contest stood out as one of the highlights of the event. Participants, dressed as beloved characters from comic books, movies, and other media, brought their A-game. The creativity and effort put into their costumes were nothing short of spectacular. Judges had a tough time determining winners, as each cosplay displayed incredible attention to detail and character authenticity. This contest not only celebrated the artistic talents of the participants but also added a dash of theatrical flair to the convention.

In addition to the contests and vendor stalls, the convention featured several other engaging activities. Karaoke sessions had participants belting out their favorite tunes, providing a fun and energetic atmosphere. Groups formed spontaneously, and before long, the library echoed with laughter and applause, fostering a true sense of community.

One of the significant aspects of the LibCon Convention is its underlying mission to promote literacy and build a strong community. While attendees enjoyed the various entertainment options, they were also encouraged to explore the library’s diverse collection of books and resources. The event effectively blended entertainment with education, making the library a vibrant cultural hub for the day.

“We want everyone to know that libraries are more than just books,” said one of the organizers. “Through events like LibCon, we’re showing the community that the library is a place for everyone, young and old, to come together, learn, and have fun.”

Many attendees echoed this sentiment, expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to connect with others who share similar interests. “I look forward to LibCon every year,” said a long-time participant. “It’s a great way to meet new friends, discover awesome new artists, and just have a lot of fun in a place that feels like home.”

For those who may have missed out, this year’s successful LibCon Convention sets high expectations for future events. With its blend of adventure, creativity, and community spirit, the Johnson City Public Library once again proved that it’s not just a place for quiet reading but a cornerstone of community engagement and cultural celebration.

In closing, the LibCon Convention continues to grow as a crucial event in Johnson City, spreading joy and fostering connections among its residents. So, if you haven’t already, mark your calendars for next year’s LibCon and prepare for an adventure that unites fun, creativity, and the love for all things literary.
