Kingsport BOE Votes to Approve Random Drug Tests for Extracurricular Students

In a major development, the Kingsport Board of Education (BOE) approved the first reading of a policy that would enforce random drug testing for high school students participating in extracurricular activities. These activities include athletics, cheerleading and spirit, competitive band, clubs, leadership positions amongst others.

It was clarified, with insight from an attorney, that the board does not possess the authority to implement such an expansion of the policy coverage.

The Kingsport BOE voted in favor of advancing this proposal. This policy will have to be passed in a second reading in order to be officially adopted and put into effect.
