During the closure, in-person payments for citations will not be accepted, but online payments are available. Kingsport Justice Center to Close for Exciting Renovations!

Attention, residents of Kingsport! Big changes are coming to the Justice Center in town. Starting at 6 a.m. on March 21, 2025, the center will be temporarily closing its doors to the public for some much-needed renovations. Don’t worry, though—the closure is only expected to last until March 31, so mark your calendars!

What’s Happening During the Closure?

During this renovation period, there are a few adjustments you’ll want to know about. The Kingsport Police Department’s records division will not be accepting in-person payments for citations. But don’t fret; you can still settle up online through the city’s website. So, whether you’re paying a parking ticket or a citation, just hop onto your computer, and you’re good to go!

If you had scheduled Municipal Court cases, those have been reset. Notifications about your new court dates will be sent directly to you via letter or phone call. If you were supposed to appear in General Sessions Court or Juvenile Court, you’ve been provided with instructions that should help guide you through the process.

How to Request Police Reports

Need to request a police report while the Justice Center is closed? No problem! You can do that by calling the records division at 423-229-9427. If you’re looking for crash reports completed by the Kingsport Police Department, these will be available online at crashdocs.org within a short period of 7 to 10 days after they are completed.

What’s in Store After the Renovation?

$13.4 million bid to enhance the Justice Center, and on top of that, an additional $5.6 million is being contributed from Sullivan County. With these funds, the center will see its footprint expand into the parking lot and will include the addition of two new courtrooms and more space for the Kingsport Police Department.

Once everything is wrapped up and the dust settles, you can expect all city court functions to operate fully from the Justice Center, creating a more efficient judicial experience for everyone. The entire renovation project is under the watchful eye of the Deputy City Manager, and it aims to significantly improve security and create a more streamlined court system.

Safety and Efficiency First

What makes these renovations so crucial? For one, the existing Justice Center is nearly 40 years old and has been struggling with the demands of a growing population in Kingsport. The renovations are designed to address numerous safety concerns while enhancing the experience for everyone who uses the facility. A single check-in point will be established to better control the flow of people during court proceedings, making it a much smoother process.

What You Need to Know About Construction

As for the construction itself, while the contract spans an impressive 960 days, the exact start date has yet to be determined. The entire project will be handled by the Preston Construction Company, totaling approximately $14.3 million. And while renovation work is underway, it’s vital to note that the center will remain operational, ensuring that public safety remains a priority.

So, get ready, Kingsport! With these renovations set to enhance your Justice Center, the future is looking bright. Though there may be temporary inconveniences, the long-term benefits will undoubtedly be worth it!
