Kingsport City Celebrates Black History Month with Array of Events

Kingsport Holds a Series of Events for Black History Month

The city of Kingsport is coming alive in celebration of Black History Month with a host of diverse events set to take place throughout February. Residents are encouraged to participate in these events to honor and cherish memories of the significant contributions of African-Americans to American history and culture.

Community Gathering with Youth Activities

On February 15, 2024, the second community gathering, in partnership with Kingsport Parks and Recreation and New Vision Youth, will enliven the atmosphere at the V.O. Dobbins Sr. Complex on Louis St. This assembly is strategically planned to engage the youth of the city with fun trivia and bingo. The timings for the event have been set from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Soul Food Black History Gathering

Continuing the grand celebration, New Vision Youth has also organized its annual Soul Food Black History Gathering on February 16, 2024. The event will be hosted in the Riverview Community Room adjacent to the pickle ball courts on Wheatley Street. The delectable soul food and dishes from other countries will showcase the culinary diversity that exists within the global community. A suggested donation will be welcomed at the gathering that will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Additionally, post the Soul Food Black History Gathering, a special Black History Senior BINGO will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are also requested to bring a door prize to further enhance the joyous spirit of the event.

“Sing Sistah Sing!” Performance by Mezzo soprano Andrea Baker

Adding an artistic tribute to the Black History Month celebrations, the renowned Mezzo-soprano Andrea Baker is scheduled to perform her show “Sing Sistah Sing!” on February 25, 2024, at the John Sevier Middle School. The show is not only a heartfelt celebration of the sound and extraordinary breadth of the African American female voice but also a significant narration of some of the unforgettable life stories of African-American women. The show pays tribute to iconic artists like Leontyne Price, Marian Anderson, Donna Summer, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday.

The prestigious event is organized in collaboration with Hope Inc, King University and Goodwill Industries of Tenneva.

Conclusion

Kingsport’s Black History Month events provide an excellent platform to commemorate, celebrate, and appreciate the significant role and contributions of African Americans in shaping the history and culture of the United States. Engaging in such events enriches one’s understanding and appreciation of the struggles, accomplishments, and contributions of the African American community.
