Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared during this chilly weather.
As winter’s chill settles in, Johnson City is taking proactive steps to prepare for an upcoming winter storm expected to hit the area. Local officials are on high alert, and the community is coming together to support those in need.
According to the latest weather report, temperatures will drop to a low of 33°F tonight with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing from the west at speeds between 10 to 15 mph. With the forecast predicting significant snowfall in the next few days, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and ready.
To keep the community safe, Johnson City Transit services will be suspended starting at **12:15 PM** on Friday, staying closed throughout Saturday as the storm rolls in. The city’s Public Works crew will focus on keeping the most heavily trafficked roads as clear as possible. A well-organized snow removal plan is already in place that utilizes over 30 snowplows and salt spreaders to tackle the incoming snow.
The snow removal process will follow a structured phased approach: first, the city will clear state routes, then move on to collector and arterial streets, finishing with neighborhood streets. With more than 4,800 tons of salt on hand, the city aims to clear or treat all roadways within a 36 to 48-hour period after the snowfall ends.
For those needing transportation to these overflow locations, the S.A.M.E Project will provide rides after individuals register at the Salvation Army. Given the increased demand during this chilly weather, the Salvation Army welcome community donations to support their efforts in providing meals, bedding, and additional resources for those seeking shelter. Online donations can be made at Johnson City Corps.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on local weather changes and to work together during this challenging time. The community spirit of Johnson City shines brightly, proving that even in the darkest of winters, there is always hope and support to be found.
