Jerry E. McNeil, 72, Respected Community Member and Freemason, Passes Away After Lengthy Illness
Johnson City is mourning the loss of a true pillar of the community, as Jerry E. McNeil, aged 72, passed away on April 7, 2025. Jerry, who had called this beautiful Tennessee town home for many years, was surrounded by family and friends at his residence, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished in the hearts of many.
Born in Carter County, Tennessee, Jerry was the beloved son of Betty Arnett McNeil and the late Fred McNeil. His family lineage adds a rich tapestry to his story, as he follows in the footsteps of his maternal grandparents, Paul and Grace (Simerly) Arnett, and paternal grandparents, Wesley and Mae McNeil, now together in eternal peace.
Jerry was more than a devoted family man; he was a dedicated member of his community. For those who knew him, he shone the brightest at his longtime church home, Sinking Creek Baptist Church. While health issues kept him from attending in person in recent years, Jerry didn’t let that stop him. He faithfully tuned into services online every week, reflecting his unwavering faith and commitment.
A member of the Carter County Cattlemen’s Association, Jerry also had an impressive 51½-year membership with the Freemasons. He served with pride at the Hampton Masonic Lodge #750, where he held the respected title of Worshipful Master in both 2011 and 2019, demonstrating his leadership skills and deep sense of duty to the organization.
Farming was a passion for Jerry, and he greatly enjoyed partnering with his brothers-in-law to raise quality Angus cattle and provide for their families. He was known for the special bond he formed with his livestock, treating them almost like pets, and showcasing his unique rapport with animals.
Beloved for his infectious laughter and remarkable sense of humor, Jerry had a wonderful way of lighting up any room he entered. Whether he was whistling cheerful tunes while working on the farm or indulging in family gatherings, he made moments unforgettable with his warm presence.
Jerry is survived by his devoted wife, Carolyn Crumley McNeil, with whom he shared a loving 49-year marriage. He also leaves behind his cherished mother, Betty Arnett McNeil, his sister Judy McNeil, and a large extended family that includes uncles, aunts, cousins, and brothers-in-law like Tom Crumley and Sam McAmis. His role as an uncle to several special nieces and nephews will surely be missed as well.
Throughout his life, Jerry forged many close friendships. The community will hold dear memories of him alongside friends like Ken Potter Jr., Cotton Stevens, Richard Sutphin, Jim McNeil, Eli Wiseman, and Brent Fannon, just to name a few. Members of both the Hampton 750 Lodge and neighbors from Jarrett Buck Loop will carry his memory in their hearts.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Jerry’s medical team for their compassionate care, including NPA Melissa Leake, Nurse Heather, and doctors Paul Benson, Kyle Colvett, and Kanishka Chakraborty, who stood by him through his illness.
For those wishing to pay their respects, services will be held at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tennessee, on April 11, 2025, at 6 p.m. For the community to show their love and support, friends are welcome to visit from 4 to 6 p.m. before the service. The funeral will feature Masonic rites led by the Hampton Masonic Lodge #750 and will be officiated by Pastor Chuck Babb.
Jerry will rest peacefully at Happy Valley Memorial Park on April 12, 2025, with attendees asked to arrive at 12:50 p.m. for the interment. His pallbearers will be Mark Tester, David Cole, Ken Potter Jr., Jim McNeil, Tyson Black, and Sam McAmis, while honorary pallbearers include Cotton Stevens, Richard Sutphin, Tom Crumley, R.J. Arnett, Bob Arnett, Randy Arnett, and Andy Arnett.
