In a thrilling move to celebrate Black History Month, the Northeast State Cultural Activities Committee and the Center for Leadership, Enrichment, Access, and Discovery are all set to host an evening with world-renowned jazz artist Will Boyd. The performance will take place on Thursday, Feb. 29, at 6 p.m., in the Entertainment Technology performance lab of the Technical Education Complex on the Blountville campus.
Boyd, a renowned reed instrumentalist, composer, and educator, represents the soul saxophone tradition, walking in the footsteps of legendary artists such as Eddie Harris, Hank Crawford, and Yusef Lateef. Born and raised in Orangeburg, S.C.,, by way of Queens, N.Y., this celebrated jazz star began his foray into the world of professional music during his teens, performing with local R&B groups.
Will Boyd’s passion for music led him to South Carolina State University, where he not only honed his skills but also earned a degree in Music Business. His academic journey was enriched by meeting and working with his future wife, Kelle Jolly, an acclaimed musician and vocalist. The university recognized Boyd’s extraordinary talent and contribution to jazz by in ducting him into its prestigious Hall of Fame.
Throughout his career, Boyd has not only showcased his mastery of the saxophone and clarinet but has also made significant contributions to the jazz world through his compositions and educational efforts. He has performed at numerous jazz festivals, collaborated with a wide array of artists, and has been a dedicated advocate for jazz education, teaching students the importance of this genre in American history and culture.
