Elizabethton is buzzing with excitement as the holiday season approaches, and nothing captures the spirit quite like the annual tradition of hanging a magnificent wreath on the historic Covered Bridge. This year, a stunning 14-foot, 100-pound wreath adorned with vibrant green foliage and bright red ribbons has found its cozy spot, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Elizabethton Fire Department and the Carter County Rescue Squad. As residents gather to share in the festivities, this grand decoration serves as a beacon of holiday cheer.
Many in the community may not know that this delightful hanging has been a cherished event for over 50 years. Fire Chief Barry Carrier, who has spent more than 30 years serving the department, shares, “We’ve always been proud to take part in this beautiful tradition. It’s an honor to help bring a bit of holiday magic to our town.”
The wreath wasn’t just thrown up there; it took a solid team effort to ensure it was ready for its big debut. Main Street Elizabethton Director Courtney Bean was on hand to ensure everything looked perfect. “We made sure the ribbons were fluffed and that everything was secure,” she explains. The wreath also glows brightly, with lights snugly in place, adding an extra sparkle to the festive display. It was heartwarming to see park visitors stop and watch as the holiday spirit came to life right before their eyes.
As the big day arrived, all eyes were on the process of hoisting this massive wreath into place. A team of brave firefighters, alongside members from the Carter County Rescue Squad, carefully loaded the wreath onto a sturdy raft. With the wreath secured, off they paddled, the anticipation building with every stroke of the oars. The sight of them making their way toward the bridge was quite a spectacle!
With the power cord connected and the hook securely in place, the moment everyone had been waiting for was finally here: up, up, and away! The wreath began its ascent, a group of officers guiding it to its rightful spot on the bridge. Cheers erupted from onlookers as the wreath snuggly settled into position, bringing a wave of community pride and festive joy.
This annual event isn’t without its challenges, however. As the years go by, both the wreath and the winch used to lift it are starting to show their age. Chief Carrier hinted that replacements might be necessary in the near future to keep this beloved tradition going strong. But for now, the wreath stands tall, delivering warm holiday wishes to all who pass over the W. Elk Avenue Bridge.
As Elizabethton gears up for the Christmas season, traditions like this one remind us all of the importance of community and togetherness. As the wreath shines bright throughout the month, it’s a beautiful reminder for residents and visitors alike to embrace the spirit of giving, joy, and celebration that this time of year brings.
So, whether you’re a long-time resident or a newcomer, make sure to stop by the Covered Bridge and take a moment to appreciate the hard work and love that has been put into hanging this giant wreath. It’s truly a sight to behold and a splendid way to kick off the holiday season!
