Holiday Cooking Safety Tips to Prevent Accidents this Thanksgiving

Holiday Cooking Safety Tips from Johnson City Fire Department

As the holiday season hits full swing, folks in Johnson City are gearing up for some delicious Thanksgiving feasts! While everyone is excited about cooking up turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, it’s also important to keep safety in mind. The Johnson City Fire Department has stepped in to share some handy tips to help prevent cooking accidents this Thanksgiving.

Cooking Fires on the Rise

Did you know that according to the National Fire Protection Association, over 1,600 home cooking fires were reported in the U.S. last year? That’s a staggering number and certainly something to think about as you prepare for your big holiday meal.

Stay Close While Cooking

The fire department advises that when you’re whipping up something scrumptious on the stovetop, it’s crucial to stay nearby. “When you are cooking anything on the stovetop, stay with it,” says Fire Prevention Officer Kevin Haynes. A little mindfulness can go a long way. And don’t forget about those handles! Always make sure they are turned in so you don’t accidentally pull hot pans down on yourself.

Deep Frying with Care

If you’re thinking about deep-frying your turkey this year, there are a few important rules to follow. “It must be cooked outside, do not try to cook it inside the house or the structure,” warns Haynes. 🤔 Another tip? Ensure that your turkey is completely thawed and dried off before you place it in the fryer. Trust us, nobody wants a greasy splash zone in the backyard! Also, remember to monitor the oil level as you add the turkey to prevent any spills.

What to Do in Case of a Fire

Despite the best precautions, accidents can happen. If you find yourself faced with a fire, don’t panic! Call 911 right away. Haynes suggests that if it’s a small fire, you can try to put it out yourself, but always give the fire department a heads-up. For those difficult oven fires, it’s best to leave the door shut, call the professionals, and turn off the power. Staying calm is key!

The Truth About Grease Fires

One crucial rule to remember when it comes to grease fires: never use water. Water can actually make the fire much worse! Instead, cover the fire with a metal lid or use baking soda. Keeping a fire extinguisher nearby could also save the day.

Spreading Holiday Cheer, Safely!

The Johnson City Fire Department is looking out for you this holiday season. By keeping these tips in mind, you can focus on what really matters – enjoying delicious food and sharing love with your loved ones!

Remember, as you head into the sprightly season filled with great food and festivities, practicing safe cooking could just be the most important ingredient of all. Happy Thanksgiving from the Johnson City Fire Department!
