Bristol is a vibrant city, but beneath the surface, a growing concern has caught the attention of many—homelessness. The Haven of Rest Rescue Mission, a key player in the fight against this issue, is witnessing a significant increase in those seeking shelter and support. It’s a heartwarming yet troubling reality in these uncertain times.
Brian Plank, the executive director of Haven of Rest Rescue Mission, shared that the need for assistance has soared since the pandemic. “The unhoused population in the Tri-Cities has skyrocketed from approximately 380 to nearly 700,” he revealed. This staggering increase highlights the pressing need for better resources and support systems.
One of the most significant factors contributing to this growth is the conclusion of COVID-19 governmental aid that once kept people housed during lockdowns. “When the government pulled back funding, many individuals who had been supported suddenly found themselves without housing,” Plank explains. It is clear that the economic fallout from the pandemic continues to impact many, leading to more families and individuals facing homelessness.
According to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), approximately 653,100 people were homeless on a single night in 2023. In Tennessee, that number was 13 in every 10,000 people. That paint a daunting picture, but Plank clarifies a common misconception: “People think that individuals are being bussed into Bristol, but the truth is that we are the only city in Southwest Virginia offering these essential services.” Many individuals move to Bristol out of necessity, drawn by the hope of finding opportunities and shelter.
Marking the complexity of homelessness, affordable housing has become increasingly difficult to find, particularly with the rise of rental properties like Airbnbs taking over what used to be affordable housing. “We are seeing a severe lack of available rental spaces, which worsens the situation for many,” Plank points out.
The community support for Haven of Rest has also dwindled recently, “We are receiving fewer donations as inflation impacts local families. More people are seeking help, but our pantry isn’t as full as it used to be,” he lamented. The organization can currently house up to 38 individuals in their dorms and another 40 in transitional housing, but more resources are desperately required to diversify their support programs.
Amidst the challenges, stories of resilience emerge. Matt Seats, a former Kingsport resident, has turned to Haven of Rest for support in his transition. “I landed at Haven on April 17 of this year and lived in their dorm for six weeks. They gave me a job, a purpose,” he shared. His journey reflects the importance of the services provided, not only offering a meal but a path back to stability.
There’s hope, however, as Haven of Rest strives to reopen its women’s dormitory, Grace House, which has been closed due to staffing shortages. “We want to open that facility for women who need support,” Plank highlighted, underlining their commitment to serving everyone in need.
Plank is hopeful for community involvement, emphasizing that “volunteers can make a big difference in helping us provide more services.” With a generous community, Haven of Rest envisions a brighter future for those in need, ensuring that no one has to face homelessness alone.
As Bristol continues to grapple with these increasing challenges, the collective efforts of organizations like Haven of Rest and the community’s support can pave the way for a solution. The fight against homelessness is a significant one, and with compassion and commitment, there’s a light of hope shining at the end of the tunnel.
