Greene County Honors School Board Leaders at TSBA Fall Meeting

Greene County Celebrates Local School Board Leaders at TSBA Meeting

On a lovely Monday evening in Greene County, the atmosphere was electric as local school board members were honored at the TSBA Northeast Fall District Meeting held at Chuckey-Doak High School. The recognition highlighted the incredible dedication and hard work of our local educational leaders who continuously strive to better our schools and students.

Honoring Exceptional Members

Among those celebrated were members from the Elizabethton City School Board: Eddie Pless, the Board Chair; Jamie Bass Schaff, the Vice Chair; and Danny O’Quinn, along with Dylan Hill from the Carter County School Board. Their commitment to improving educational standards and advocating for the needs of their communities was on full display during the meeting.

TSBA’s Fall District Meetings provide our staff the opportunity to speak with our members and listen to their concerns on multiple topics,” shared Dr. Tammy Grissom, the Executive Director of TSBA. “This allows us to advocate effectively on their behalf while providing them with information they need to make informed decisions for the students in their community.”

Engaging Discussions

The evening wasn’t just about recognition; it was also an interactive session where local board members and superintendents participated in a survey. The topics of discussion were many and varied, including Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement (TISA), third-grade proficiency, school letter grades, and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in public schools.

These discussions are particularly vital as local school boards prepare for upcoming challenges, especially as the General Assembly approaches. Issues such as teacher shortages and the eligibility of students in TSSAA were also central to the conversations that night, reflecting the real needs and concerns faced by educators and students alike.

TSBA Boardsmanship Awards

In addition to the meetings, several Northeast District school board members received TSBA Boardsmanship Awards for 2024. These awards spotlight individuals who have successfully met one of five levels of boardsmanship standards over the past year. It’s a fantastic way to recognize the dedication board members show towards professional development and proactive participation in activities beyond their local mandates.

The awards are divided into levels, from I to V, with those for Levels I-IV being presented during the Fall District Meetings and Level V awarded at an annual convention in November. The TSBA’s Boardsmanship program doesn’t just tally up participation; it celebrates the quality of engagement in training, workshops, and other pertinent events.

Community Impact

Events like the TSBA Northeast Fall District Meeting are crucial not only for the recognition of achievements but also for fostering a spirit of collaboration among local education professionals. It brings together passionate individuals who are committed to making a difference in the lives of children throughout their districts.

With so much happening in the realm of education, from rising technologies to pressing legislative issues, it’s clear that our local school board members are at the forefront, advocating for the future of our students. The expertise and insights they share during gatherings like this play a significant role in shaping educational policies and practices within our community.

As we celebrate these honorees and the ongoing efforts to enhance our educational landscape, let’s remember the important work being done each day by these dedicated individuals. Their hard efforts are paving the way for future generations to thrive.
