This coming weekend, the thriving communities of Nickelsville and Gate City in Virginia have a full slate of fun filled activities as they each host their own unique festivals. Both towns are encouraging local residents and visitors alike to join the celebrations and make the most of the festive season.
The eventful weekend kicks off on Friday with the start of Nickelsville Days. A free movie night will be held in Keith Memorial Park, featuring a popular screening of the family-friendly classic, “The Sandlot”. The movie begins at 7:30 p.m., while an array of concessions will be available at the park for attendees to enjoy.
Festivities resume bright and early on Saturday with a Community Yard Sale starting at 8 a.m. at the Nickelsville Elementary School. The highlight of the morning will be the town parade, which lines up at 10:30 a.m. for an 11:30 a.m. start. The parade will witness a rally of cars, emergency vehicles, and other participants performing throughout.
From noon onward, guests can indulge in a variety of free carnival rides and games. The day is packed with exciting events including a Hot Dog Eating Contest at 12:30 p.m., Bingo at 1 p.m., the Strongest Farm Hand Contest at 2 p.m., and a Dog Show making up for a hilarious and enjoyable afternoon at 3 p.m.
The day-long festival will also entertain through musical performances featuring Three Miles South from 6 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a surprise 50/50 drawing and prize giveaways at 7.30 p.m. The evening will conclude with Jacob Woodruff taking the stage at 8 p.m., followed by an impressive fireworks display at 9.30 p.m. to mark the end of Nickelsville Days.
Meanwhile in Gate City, the Scott County Public Library will be hosting the 2024 Spinning the Yarn festival, commencing at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Festivities begin with renowned mystery writer Gayle Leeson, making an appearance to introduce the first event of the day.
At 11 a.m., attendees will have the pleasure to meet the nationally renowned, county fair-winning cook and author Linda Skeens. A Community Recipe Swap will follow at noon, providing an opportunity for attendees to share their favorite recipes and cooking tips.
Music can be enjoyed in the early afternoon as musician Tammy Martin graces the stage at 1:30 p.m. This will be followed by a session with playwright Dr. Douglas Pote at 2:45 p.m. The festival concludes with a hands-on Book Page Flower Craft demonstration at 4 p.m., a fun activity for all ages.
