Committed to aiding veterans, ETSU lands major award

ETSU Honored with Silver Military Friendly® School Designation

In recognition of its ongoing commitment to supporting military veterans, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has been honored with the prestigious Military Friendly® School designation for the 14th consecutive year. This year, the university achieved the silver status, the second-highest designation available.

The award, bestowed following an in-depth analysis of public data and responses from surveys, stands testimony to the university’s considerable efforts in aiding individuals who have served in uniform.

Supporting Military-Affiliated Students

Military and veteran services provided by ETSU have significantly supported students like Kenton Rowe, a senior and platoon leader with the Tennessee Army National Guard, and Alexis Calain, another senior whose parent served in the Navy for 20 years. Both students expressed deep gratitude for the university’s support.

“The staff has always been friendly and have given me advice for my military career,” said Rowe. Similarly, Calain appreciated the staff for their prompt assistance and dedication in treating military-affiliated students as individuals.

Pioneering Student Support Initiatives

The university goes the extra mile to serve those who have protected the nation with exclusive benefits such as priority registration for classes each semester, access to the ETSU’s Military-Affiliated Student Resource Center, scholarships, out-of-state tuition waivers, and work-study positions for those drawing GI Bill® benefits.

Veteran students also have an opportunity to join the ETSU chapter of the Student Veterans of America and receive personalized support from the dedicated Military and Veteran Services team.

Continual Improvement and Commitment

Director of Military and Veteran Services, Dan Bishop, adequately expressed the university’s determination to continually improve. “ETSU has a long and established history of assisting those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces,” he noted. “But we aren’t complacent. There is an incredible tradition at this university of generating servant leaders, and we want that to continue.”

ETSU is widely recognized for its excellent academic environment blended with a supportive environment for military-affiliated students. Through its commitment to helping veterans navigate their benefits and providing them with opportunities to succeed, ETSU has once again proved its worthiness for the significant award.
