Exciting Journey for ETSU Marching Bucs as They Head to NYC for Thanksgiving Parade

The anticipation is building in Johnson City as the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Marching Bucs prepare to take the stage in one of the most iconic events in the United States: the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! Arriving in New York City on Tuesday, the band is ready to showcase their talent and pride on a national platform.
However, the road to this momentous performance hasn’t been a walk in the park. The ETSU community faced some significant challenges, particularly due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. In a recent announcement, the university detailed how the storm disrupted not just the lives of their band members but also the entire community.
A Personal Touch
One of the band members, sousaphone player Corey Luttrell, experienced these challenges firsthand. For three long weeks, Corey had no contact with their beloved grandmother, who lives in Carter County. “While I was sheltered from the storm’s immediate impact, my thoughts were consumed with worry for my family,” Corey shared. With their grandmother living alone in a small area cut off by flooding, the anxiety was palpable.
But the resilience of the community shone through! Corey learned that, despite the dire situation, their grandmother had support from neighbors and even strangers who brought food and water. “It’s truly touching,” Corey reflected. “The way the community came together has restored my faith in humanity. Even little communities can do big things to help.”
Band’s Dedication Shines Bright
Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. Joe Moore, praised the Marching Bucs for their incredible spirit and commitment. “Our students have put in countless hours of hard work, and it hasn’t always been easy, especially with everything our region has been through recently,” he said. His belief in the band is contagious: “We’re ready to bring our best to New York and make ETSU and Tennessee proud.”
The excitement doesn’t stop at the parade! On November 27, the Color Guard and Majorettes will perform live on stage before the fabulous Radio City Rockettes during their Christmas Spectacular. Talk about an exciting start to the holiday season!
Celebrating Tradition
What’s even more remarkable is that ETSU is making history as the first Tennessee collegiate marching band in over 60 years to be invited to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “The band is a beacon of ETSU pride,” Dr. Moore exclaimed. “We’re excited to take that spirit with us to New York City and show the world what the Marching Bucs can do.”
What’s Ahead in NYC?
After the preparation and anticipation, the band will indulge in a little bit of sightseeing too! Before the grand day of the parade on November 28, they’ll attend a Broadway show and tour some of the most famous landmarks in New York City. It’s a chance for perfecting their performance while soaking in the magic of the Big Apple!
