ETSU Achieves Remarkable HERD Ranking Improvement, Celebrating Research Excellence

ETSU Celebrates Research Milestone with Significant HERD Ranking Jump

Johnson City, TN – East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is celebrating a major achievement in its research endeavors, as recent figures reveal a remarkable rise in the Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) rankings. After being positioned at No. 272 last year, the university has leaped to a record-high of No. 239 out of a total of 664 universities included in the survey.

What is the HERD Ranking?

The HERD Survey, conducted annually by the National Science Foundation, is a comprehensive census that evaluates colleges and universities across the U.S. It focuses specifically on those institutions that have spent at least $150,000 on research and development (R&D) during the fiscal year. The survey captures crucial information about R&D expenditures, including the specific fields of research involved, sources of funding, and details on research personnel.

A Team Effort at ETSU

Dr. Nicholas Hagemeier, the Vice Provost for Research and Chief Research Officer at ETSU, attributes this significant jump in rankings to the collaborative efforts of many individuals on campus. “This is a significant jump in our rankings and represents the hard work of many people across our campus, including colleagues in Business and Finance, college deans, associate deans for research, college business managers, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Research,” he explained. His dedication reflects the university’s commitment to nurturing a robust research culture.

Dr. Hagemeier went on to note the university’s ambitious aspiration: “Given our portfolio of programs at ETSU, we are on our way to becoming a top 200 university.” There’s a buzz of excitement on campus as faculty and students alike feel motivated by this recognition.

Research Awards on the Rise

In addition to the improved HERD ranking, ETSU has experienced an impressive increase in research and sponsored program awards, reaching over $71 million in the fiscal year 2024. This surge is a reflection of the university’s commitment to research excellence and showcases how the institution harnesses its resources for innovative projects that benefit both the local and broader community.

Making a Difference

Dr. Kimberly D. McCorkle, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, emphasized the university’s mission. “This rise in the national HERD rankings and other research accomplishments over the past year underscore our commitment to fostering a culture of research excellence that not only elevates ETSU but also creates meaningful impact for our region and beyond,” she stated.

The impact of ETSU’s research initiatives can be observed across various fields, including health sciences, education, and environmental studies. Faculty and students are encouraged to engage in groundbreaking projects that address real-world challenges, making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

The Future Looks Bright

With these positive developments, students and faculty at ETSU are optimistic about the future. The university is building momentum, and with continued dedication to research, there’s potential for further advancements in its HERD ranking and contributions to society.

As ETSU continues on this trajectory of excellence, the Johnson City community can take pride in being part of an institution that not only values knowledge and innovation but also strives to use that knowledge for the greater good.

Conclusion

In summary, ETSU has reached a vital milestone in research recognition with the HERD ranking boost and an impressive rise in research funding. The collaborative spirit and determination to excel at the university are evident, paving the way for even greater accomplishments in the coming years.
