Join the Effort: ETSU Hosts Disaster Recovery Information Sessions

In Johnson City, Tennessee, the spirit of community and support is shining bright as East Tennessee State University (ETSU) steps up to host a series of information sessions aimed at helping volunteers get involved in the recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. It’s heartwarming to see our local university not only educating its students but also opening its doors to the wider public, inviting everyone to come together for a worthy cause.

Understanding the Need

With the impact of Hurricane Helene still felt in our region, many residents are looking for ways to help. Whether it’s clearing debris, providing food, or offering emotional support, every bit of assistance counts. ETSU recognizes this need and has jumped into action, offering resources and training to ensure that volunteers are well-prepared for the challenges ahead. The recent turnout of over 400 students and employees at the information sessions is a testament to the eagerness and commitment of our community.

What You Can Expect

These sessions are not just lectures; they’re about equipping volunteers with the hands-on skills necessary for effective disaster recovery. The sessions cover a variety of essential topics, including:

  • Where to find organized volunteer opportunities
  • Safety measures to observe while working in flooded areas
  • What to bring and wear while volunteering

With this information, attendees will be armed with the knowledge needed to make a real difference in the lives of those affected by the hurricane. Understanding how to work safely and effectively is crucial in these important recovery efforts.

Upcoming Sessions

Excited to jump in? Mark your calendars! The university has set aside specific times for both in-person and online sessions:

  • Monday, October 7 at 11:30 a.m. – Join via Zoom
  • Tuesday, October 8 at 3 p.m. – Come to the D.P. Culp Student Center Auditorium
  • Tuesday, October 8 at 6 p.m. – Another chance to join via Zoom

Each session lasts about one hour, providing ample time for questions and interaction with the facilitators who are well-versed in disaster recovery.

Interested individuals can simply register for the sessions to ensure their spot. Spaces may be limited, so it’s best to sign up as soon as possible. The opportunity to engage and learn how to support our community during this recovery process is one we should all take seriously.

A Community Effort

In times of need, it’s the members of our community who shine the brightest. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or someone curious about how to get started, these sessions are a perfect opportunity to gain insight and become part of a collective effort to rebuild and support one another.

Remember, every minute you spend preparing and every action you take can have a ripple effect in helping those in distress. Let’s all come together in Johnson City to lend a hand to our neighbors affected by Hurricane Helene. We have the heart to help, and with the right knowledge and preparation, we can make a meaningful impact.
