ETSU Launches ‘Compass Core Curriculum’ to Provide More Class Flexibility

On Friday, March 1st, 2024, the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) announced the rollout of a new program named ‘Compass Core Curriculum’, created to cater to students preferential learning methodology, giving them the option to choose the classes they want to attend. This new development is set to provide more flexibility to students in their educational pursuits, in line with offering a competent learning system.

An Innovative Approach to Learning

General education at ETSU comprises nearly 30% of the curriculum for a bachelor’s degree. These foundational courses provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed both in their chosen disciplines and in their careers beyond the university. In the Compass Core Curriculum, ETSU is introducing a fresh and innovative approach that offers students a more flexible, relevant, and coherent learning experience.

“The main goal is to let students have their pick when it comes to the classes they want to attend”, stated Kimberly McCorkle, the Provost of Academic Affairs. “The aim is for the curriculum to be applicable and significant to students, granting them options and flexibility as they explore different classes.” McCorkle further addressed that students, in every general education course, will now be privy to ‘high impact teaching’, a hands-on learning experience.

Student-Centred Curriculum Planning

Initiated over a year and a half ago, the design and preparation of the Compass Core Curriculum involved the integrated efforts of students, faculty, and staff from the university. As a significant contributor to the development of the new curriculum, ETSU junior Trent White commended the program for its flexible nature and capacity to accommodate students’ varied interests.

“I’m a Political Science student, this change means more of an opportunity for students like me to uncover what I am passionate about”, White said. He further emphasised the importance of having diverse class options for student success.“If there’s something that students may be interested in, they can tailor their coursework to align with their unique interests.”

Looking Forward

The improvisation in the learning pedagogy stands as a testament to ETSU’s commitment to optimising students’ academic performance, adaptation, and overall experience. The Compass Core Curriculum will be implemented across all degree programs in the beginning of the fall semester of 2024.

Students can look forward to a revamped curriculum that not only matches their interests but also develops critical professional skills. By offering a wide variety of content areas to choose from, this new curriculum truly maximises education flexibility and opens up a new chapter of innovative learning at ETSU.
