Engineers Inspire Future Generation at Science Hill School

Johnson City, TN – A team of professional engineers from Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) took out time to inspire the younger generation to appreciate the world of engineering at Science Hill School during the Engineer’s Week celebrated from Feb. 18 to 24.

Engineers Engage Students in Interactive Sessions

The interaction between the students and the engineers was quite enriching as it demystified various concepts revolving around engineering, science, and technology. Through immersive, hands-on, and interactive sessions, students gained insights into NFS and its parent company, BWX Technologies. As part of the interactive sessions, the engineers exposed the students to various facets of the engineering field and the essential roles they play in daily life.

About NFS and BWX Technologies

Also, students discovered the role of NFS as the exclusive provider of fuel for the Navy, thereby shedding light on the importance of applied engineering and technological advancements in shaping national defense. NFS, based in Erwin, Tennessee, and a subsidiary of BWX Technologies, has been providing nuclear fuel for the United States Navy’s fleet of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the past 60 years.

Impact on Students

The students’ reception to the engineers’ visit was overwhelmingly positive, as many expressed appreciation for their newfound understanding of what engineers do. For many, this experience inspired a newfound respect for the engineering profession and increased interest in potentially pursuing careers in engineering or related fields in the future.

The Purpose of the Visit

The engineers’ visit aimed at promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among students and providing them with a helpful real-world perspective. While textbooks can teach concepts and ideas, there’s nothing quite like learning how those ideas apply in the real world, especially from professionals who use them daily in their work.

Acknowledging the Importance of STEM Education

As our world becomes increasingly more digital and technologically advanced, promoting STEM education is more crucial than ever. Budgets for STEM education continue to increase nationally, and hands-on experiences like this one provide invaluable context and motivation for young learners. The emphasis on STEM education, particularly engineering, will likely remain a priority for the foreseeable future.

Wrapping up Engineer’s Week Festivities

The Engineer’s Week visit to Science Hill was part of a broader week-long celebration commemorating engineers and their contributions to society. Not only was this initiative beneficial for students, but it also proved crucial for the engineers who were thrilled to share their passion for engineering with the future generation. As Engineer’s Week wrapped up, it’s clear that this year’s event achieved its goal; encouraging more young people to think about careers in engineering and technology and celebrating the impact engineers have on our world.
