In the heart of Elizabethton, the air was filled with the delightful sounds of laughter, music, and the spirit of the season as the annual Christmas tree lighting event lit up Covered Bridge Park last Saturday evening. The stunning Fraser fir sparkled with lights, providing a magical backdrop for families and friends who gathered to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season.
Despite the lingering effects of Hurricane Helene, which had made its mark on the area, the chilly evening proved to be a heartwarming reminder of community resilience. The event was a collaborative effort, sponsored by Carter County Bank, the City of Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department, and the Elizabethton Chamber. Residents were eager to take part in the festivities, and the turnout was nothing short of impressive!
As the evening progressed, attendees enjoyed a variety of delicious treats from local food trucks that lined the park, serving up everything from comforting funnel cakes to buttery popcorn. Hot cocoa and coffee were also a hit as families huddled together to keep warm on the brisk night.
The stage was alive with talent, featuring performances from several local groups. The Happy Valley High School Band opened the festivities with their rendition of the national anthem, setting a patriotic tone for the evening. Following them, the East Side Elementary ECS School Choir captivated the audience with their sweet holiday tunes, bringing joy to the hearts of both children and adults.
Adding a touch of history to the night, Friends of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park donned colonial attire and sang traditional carols, creating a delightful blend of festive cheer and cultural context.
The moment everyone had been waiting for came when local students from Elizabethton High School’s sociology class used their enthusiastic spirit to signal the countdown for the tree lighting. Their teacher, Alex Campbell, proudly watched as the students blew the horn, and with that, the majestic Fraser fir and ten additional trees lit up the park in a fabulous glow!
In a heartfelt presentation, Andrew McKeehan, the president of Carter County Bank, took the stage to recognize the incredible talents of Daniel Grindstaff. Grindstaff, along with his family, has drawn attention to their hometown through music, inspiring the audience and underscoring the event’s sense of unity.
The gathering was a family affair, as children enjoyed playful interactions with Santa Claus, who was more than happy to receive puppy love and offer smiles for close-up photographs. Parents, wrapped in jackets and blankets, captured these moments while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
Elizabethton’s Christmas tree lighting was not just another event on the calendar; it was a reminder of what the season is all about—coming together, celebrating community, and creating cherished memories. This yearly tradition fills the air with warmth, laughter, and the spirit of giving, making it a must-attend occasion for all.
As the night came to an end, many left Covered Bridge Park with hearts full of joy and the promise of the holiday season ahead. With moments of normalcy finally returning, it’s clear that the warmth of Elizabethton shines brighter than ever, especially during this special time of year.
