News Summary

A tragic incident in Elizabethton occurred when a tractor-trailer collided with a historical cannon at the War Memorial Monument. This accident raised concerns about traffic conditions for heavy vehicles and the preservation of local history. Community officials are now urging for improved traffic management around the monument to prevent such incidents in the future. The loss of the cannon, a significant historical piece, has left residents mourning as discussions continue on maintaining their heritage.

Elizabethton Hit by Unfortunate Tractor-Trailer Incident!

In the charming city of Elizabethton, excitement turned into dismay on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, as a tractor-trailer met with a historical cannon at the War Memorial Monument, leaving the community reeling from the impact. This unexpected accident has sparked conversations about safety, traffic conditions, and the preservation of our local history.

A Close Encounter of the Heavy Kind

The mishap unfolded as a large tractor-trailer truck was attempting to turn around the monument, located downtown. Unfortunately, while navigating the tight confines of the area, the truck struck both the beloved cannon and a concrete slab associated with the monument. The incident took place while the truck was traveling east on Elk Avenue, a route that has seemingly become trickier since the closure of the Broad Street Bridge for repairs, which is set to reopen in May 2025.

The truck driver later reported that he was unaware of the collision and didn’t feel any impact. It wasn’t until he noticed smoke rising from under the trailer that he realized he had inadvertently dragged a piece of the concrete slab for several hundred feet. Without hesitation, he pulled over on Highway 91 to address the situation. However, he was later charged for failure to exercise due care during the incident.

Concerns Over Traffic and Safety

Community officials, including the Elizabethton Police Department and City Public Information Officer Ivan Sanders, expressed concern about the suitability of the roadway around the War Memorial Monument for heavy vehicles. Sanders emphasized that the roundabout design is simply too small for a semi-truck to navigate safely.

Sadly, this is not the first time the Soldiers Monument has faced damage. The monument, which was built between 1912 and 1913 and dedicated on October 13 of the same year, has seen its share of incidents. It was previously struck by a semi-truck in 1999 and underwent repairs due to a hit-and-run incident in October 2000, funded by community donations. Undoubtedly, the latest event has stirred up memories of those previous misfortunes.

A Cannon with a Rich History

The cannon that was unfortunately destroyed was a donation from the War Department in 1916, along with several cannonballs, which were added to the monument’s base. Joe Penza, an archivist at the Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library, voiced concerns regarding the loss of this historical piece, highlighting the cannon’s significance within the community.

A day after the incident, observers noted that debris from the collision still littered the shoulder of Highway 91, where the concrete slab had been dragged away. City workers took to the area, diligently cleaning up the remnants of the accident in an effort to restore some order to the site.

Looking Forward

As residents grapple with the disappointment of losing an iconic piece of the monument, city officials have made it clear that there are no immediate plans to repair or replace the cannon until traffic flow issues surrounding the monument are adequately addressed. While this may be disheartening news for many in the community, it is essential to prioritize safety and ensure that such accidents are prevented in the future.

This incident has opened the door for discussions around traffic management in Elizabethton and the importance of maintaining and preserving its rich history. Residents and officials alike are hopeful that measures can be implemented to prevent further mishaps, allowing the community to cherish and respect its historical treasures.

As Elizabethton moves forward, the story of the cannon will undoubtedly be woven into tales of the city’s resilience and commitment to preserving its heritage in the face of unexpected challenges. Through collective efforts, the community can work to safeguard its history while ensuring safe travel for all who pass through this quaint town.
