Elizabethton Embraces Recovery with Support from the SBA
It’s a beautiful sunny morning in Elizabethton, with temperatures reaching a pleasant 72°F, as the community throws its full weight behind recovery efforts following the recent flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. The skies are clear, and the winds are gentle, creating a perfect backdrop for the revitalization of local businesses. As part of the ongoing recovery mission, Isabel Casillas Guzman, the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), made a visit to the city on Wednesday. Her goal? To underscore the vital role small businesses play in reclaiming their communities after natural disasters.
Connecting with Local Entrepreneurs
During her visit, Guzman took the time to chat with local business owners, including May Candelaria and her daughter, Candice, at their delightful shop, Tweetsie Trailing Ice Cream Co. Located right in downtown Elizabethton at 709.5 E. Elk Ave, this quaint ice cream shop is a wonderful spot for sweet treats. Guzman even sampled some of their tasty offerings, which delighted the crowd that had gathered!
“The community has shown tremendous resilience, but we need to ensure that businesses like this are supported,” Guzman said, referring to the importance of local businesses in the recovery process. “This ice cream shop is not just a business, it’s a place where memories are made, and we need to help preserve that.”
Challenges for Riverside Taphouse
Guzman also met with the co-owners of Riverside Taphouse, Cheri Tinney and Michael Howell. Their establishment, which usually buzzes with activity, faced some hurdles recently. Although the flood on September 27 didn’t damage their building, the resulting closure of Broad Street Bridge has caused an economic ripple effect. The rerouted traffic has led to a decrease in customers, putting pressure on their business.
“It’s tough right now,” Howell explained. “While our building is safe, the foot traffic isn’t what it used to be. We hope to see improvements soon.” Guzman’s visit aimed to provide reassurance to them and other local businesses that support and resources are available through the SBA.
Disaster Assistance Awaits
The heart of the recovery effort is the newly opened Multi-Agency Resource Center, located at 1745 E. U.S. Highway 19E in Elizabethton. Here, disaster victims can apply for low-interest loans to help them get back on their feet. The center is a hub of support, and SBA officials were on hand to assist with applications and to answer questions about the available resources.
As Guzman walked through the center, the air was filled with hope and determination. “We’re committed to helping Elizabethton and its residents rebuild and recover,” she affirmed. Her presence gave the community a boost and opened doors for entrepreneurs to access much-needed funding.

Guzman’s visit was not just about business; it was about community spirit. The locals warmed up to Guzman, following her around as she toured the area, making connections, and sharing laughs. When she selected a Dr. Enuf soft drink instead of one of the beers from Riverside Taphouse, the crowd erupted in cheerful jeers and applause, showcasing the camaraderie within this resilient community.
