Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Wins Big at TRPA Conference

Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Shines at Statewide Conference

What an exciting week it’s been for Elizabethton! The Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department recently made waves at the annual Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA) Conference, held in Murfreesboro from November 4 to November 7, 2024. The event brought together parks and recreation professionals from across the state, all dedicated to making local parks and programs even better.

A Night of Honors

During the captivating Sneaker Ball Awards Banquet, the department celebrated remarkable achievements that showcased their hard work and dedication. One of the standout moments of the night was when Assistant Director and former Maintenance Supervisor Garrett Johnson received the highly regarded Wayne Hansard Award. This award is reserved for those who exemplify outstanding dedication to maintaining parks, facilities, and grounds. Johnson’s commitment shines as brightly as the trophies themselves!

Recognition for Professional Growth

The celebration didn’t stop there! Assistant Director Kelly Kitchens was also honored during the conference, receiving her Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) pin. This credential is nationally recognized and signifies a high level of expertise in parks and recreation. Kitchens’ achievement emphasizes her relentless dedication to ensuring that Elizabethton’s parks and programs operate at the highest standards of service, safety, and overall community enrichment.

Elizabethton Takes Home the “Step Ahead Award”

In addition to individual accolades, the department snagged the inaugural “Step Ahead Award”, a perpetual trophy given to the city that submits its award entries to TRPA ahead of all others. This distinct recognition highlights Elizabethton Parks and Recreation’s proactive approach and their commitment to excellence. It’s clear that the hard work and dedication of everyone involved have not gone unnoticed!

The Heart of TRPA

The TRPA was founded back in 1952 and has grown into a non-profit professional society with over 2,100 individual and agency members. This organization is all about supporting effective professionals in their quest to achieve healthy, livable communities. They’re committed to providing education on cutting-edge methods and programs, advocating for parks and recreation funding, and updating members through a variety of channels—including in-person events, online publications, and virtual meetings.

Community Impact

The accolades won at the 2024 TRPA Conference testify to the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department’s ongoing dedication to improving the quality of life for the residents of Elizabethton. By focusing on providing excellent public spaces, the department enriches the community and fosters a strong sense of belonging and joy among all who visit.

Looking Ahead

With their recent accomplishments, the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department not only celebrates its past but also looks forward to a vibrant and motivating future. They plan to continue pushing the envelope, crafting programs that benefit everyone, and transforming local parks into cherished community hubs.
