Exciting Times for Elizabethton as New Leadership Begins!

Elizabethton is buzzing with excitement following the recent municipal election! On Tuesday, the city’s City Council held a swearing-in ceremony to welcome new members and officially elect a new mayor and mayor pro-tem, marking a fresh chapter for the local government.

The day kicked off with a special ceremony presided over by the Honorable Stacy Street, who warmly welcomed the newly elected members of the City Council. Among them were incumbents Kim Birchfield and Jeff Treadway, who are back for another term, alongside Debbie Gouge, the only new councilwoman of the current term. Gouge stepped into the role previously held by former Mayor Cur Alexander, who decided not to run again after an incredible 20-year tenure. Talk about leaving a legacy!

A New Mayor Takes the Helm

Following the festivities of the swearing-in, a special called City Council meeting commenced. The first order of business was exciting: electing a new mayor. Richard Barker put forth the name of Bill Carter for the position, with Michael Simerly seconding the nomination. The vote was unanimous—Carter was officially elected and handed control of the meeting.

Introducing Mayor Pro-Tem

But that wasn’t all! The proceedings continued as the council needed to fill the role of mayor pro-tem. Once again, Barker nominated Simerly, who was met with enthusiastic support from his fellow council members. With no other nominations, Simerly easily secured the position—what a day for these two dedicated leaders!

A Generous Donation for Community Improvements

Before they wrapped up the meeting, Carter County Mayor Patty Woodby stepped up to the podium to express appreciation for Elizabethton’s vital support during the initial phases of Hurricane Helene’s disaster relief. To everyone’s delight, she presented a check for $100,000 aimed at repairing the beloved Cat Island Park, which suffered from flooding. This funding is part of a much larger $1 million donation from the Randy Boyd Foundation—a boon for the community!

Looking Ahead: Mayor Carter’s Vision

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Carter shared his thoughts about stepping into this important role, acknowledging the remarkable challenge of succeeding a legend like Mayor Alexander. “I consider it a privilege to serve the people of Elizabethton. The city is headed in a positive direction and I want to make sure it stays in that direction,” Carter expressed earnestly. He also made it clear that demonstrating value for taxpayers while continuing to beautify the community would be top priorities during his administration.
