Elizabethton is in mourning as it remembers the life of a remarkable member of the community. Jeffrey “Jeff” William Cates, aged 65, passed away on November 4, 2024, after a battle with illness, leaving behind a legacy rich with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Family, friends, and the entire community are now gathering to celebrate his life and bid farewell to a truly golden-hearted man.
Born in Elizabethton to Carl William Cates and Norma Nell Lowe Cates, Jeff was the type of person that blended warmth with dedication. He devoted himself to his family, including his beloved wife, Regina Cates, and his son, Joshua William Cates, along with his wife Veronica and grandson Oliver. One could say Jeff was the quintessential family man who loved every role he played—from devoted husband to loving papaw.
Jeff’s deep-rooted faith was an essential part of his identity. He was not only a member but also a former deacon of the East River Park Christian Church in Elizabethton. Community and faith went hand in hand for Jeff, and he involved himself wholeheartedly in his church. His faith was not just about attending services but about embodying love and compassion in all aspects of life.
A passionate musician from a young age, Jeff’s high school years were filled with music. He played in both the Betsy Marching Band and the Jazz Band, showcasing his talents with various instruments such as the trumpet, bass guitar, and piano. His love for music blossomed into a career when he became a partner in the family business, Cates Music Center, where he was deeply involved in supporting local events with his sound reinforcement expertise. You may have seen him at the Blue Plum Festival, Rhythm and Roots, and various other notable events.
Throughout his illness, it was the people around Jeff that made all the difference. His family was his rock; his mother Nell, brother Greg, and mother-in-law Roma Greenwell rallied together to ensure he continued to receive love and care. Many friends, including long-term buddies like Brian Montgomery, showered him with kindness and support. Whether it was sharing food or a simple laughter, the community really stepped up during challenging times.
A service celebrating Jeff’s life is scheduled for November 8, 2024, at 1 p.m., at the Memorial Funeral Chapel. Family and friends will gather from 11 a.m. until the service starts. Everyone is welcome to share their fond memories. The family will also conduct an interment at Happy Valley Memorial Park following the service.
Although he has left this world, Jeff will forever be remembered for his warm spirit, dedication to family, love for music, and the lasting imprint he left on the lives of those around him. As Elizabethton comes together in remembrance, it becomes clear that while we mourn the loss of a great man, we also celebrate the invaluable gift of his memory, reminding us to cherish our own loved ones fiercely.
