As the holiday season approaches, Elizabethton is gearing up for some fantastic celebrations that will light up the community! This year, Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park is set to kick off the festivities with the highly anticipated Overmountain Christmas Open House. Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as the park transforms into a winter wonderland filled with delight and cheer.
If you’re looking for that perfect holiday gift, look no further! The open house will feature a variety of talented craft vendors and makers. It’s a wonderful chance to support local artisans while checking off everyone on your shopping list. And don’t forget to visit the park’s gift shop, which will be stocked with plenty of new and exciting items sure to please.
But that’s not all! The park has planned a day full of engaging activities. Enjoy the sounds of the season with historically dressed carolers who will serenade attendees with classic tunes. For history buffs, there will be several fascinating historical presentations and dance demonstrations featuring groups like the English Country Dancers and Appalachian Irish Dancers. You can even get the kiddos involved with a special Christmas craft project designed just for them.
As the afternoon approaches, gather around for a magical moment with Santa Claus. He’ll share a wonderful story and will be available for visits and photos, creating cherished memories for families. Here’s a sneak peek at the schedule for the day:
As if that wasn’t enough, Sycamore Shoals will also host a special hike on Friday, November 29, as part of the Tennessee State Parks “After Thanksgiving Day Hike” program. Join park ranger Taylor Moorefield for “Walking in Frontier Footsteps,” a guided journey through the grounds, revealing the rich historical events that shaped Tennessee and America. This hike begins at 10 a.m. and will cover some uneven terrain, so be sure to wear suitable shoes and dress for the weather. While the hike is free, don’t forget to register ahead of time, as space is limited. You can sign up at tnstateparks.com/parks/events/sycamore-shoals.
The holiday cheer continues with a community favorite, “Christmas at the Carter Mansion.” Scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 6 and 7, this event brings the year 1780 to life with a delightful colonial celebration. Guests will explore the historic John and Landon Carter Mansion, located at 1031 Broad Street, where they’ll be greeted by historic interpreters who will guide them through the beautifully decorated home by lantern light. Each tour is filled with the sights and sounds of an 18th-century Christmas, making it a breathtaking experience for all ages.
With tours running every 20 minutes starting at 6 p.m., reservations are required, so be sure to secure your spot! General admission is $14 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. For those less inclined to tour, the park’s visitor center and museum at 1651 West Elk Ave will be open for exploration at your convenience.
Embrace the holiday spirit in Elizabethton this season with these fantastic events that celebrate our rich history and community. Whether shopping, hiking, dancing, or gathering around with Santa, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
