Elizabethton is all set to welcome the holiday spirit as the iconic Fraser fir tree lighting event takes center stage on Saturday, November 3, at 5:15 p.m. in the charming Covered Bridge Park. This much-anticipated occasion marks the official start of the festive season in the city, and you won’t want to miss it!
Get ready for an evening filled with festive music, delicious food, and a special appearance by everyone’s favorite jolly figure—Santa Claus himself! Families are encouraged to come out and create lasting memories, as the park will be alive with the sounds of the holiday season.
Originally scheduled to be held at the Folsom House on E. Elk Avenue, the event has been moved to Cover Bridge Park due to increased traffic in the downtown area caused by the closure of the Broad Street Bridge. But not to worry—this new location promises to provide an equally cozy and festive atmosphere for all.
Not only will the historic Fraser fir be glowing brightly, but the evening will also see the lighting of ten additional trees throughout the park. These trees have been generously donated by Hawk Mountain Tree Farm and Garden Center in Boone, N.C. After the festivities, these lovely trees will find a new home in Elizabethton parks as part of ongoing repair efforts in the area.
The Fraser fir is not just a tree; it’s a cherished part of Elizabethton’s holiday history, having first been decorated and lit on November 20, 1988. Since then, it has transformed into a beloved tradition for the community. The first lighting was made possible through donations from local residents, who raised approximately $2,700 to purchase the lights. These were expertly placed on the tree by J.I. Cornett and his construction company, showcasing the community’s spirit of giving.
The tree’s roots run deep in the area’s history, with the great-granddaughter of Major Henderson Folsom—a prominent figure in Elizabethton’s past—making a touching contribution to the tradition. Doris Folsom, who now lives in Oklahoma City, recalled in her note how her great-grandfather had planted two trees on either side of the brick walkway many years ago.
Major Folsom wasn’t just an ordinary resident; he was the first commissioned officer from Carter County in the Confederate Army and a well-respected lawyer and educator in the community. His legacy is intertwined with the very fabric of Elizabethton.
The tree lighting event this year is proudly sponsored by the Carter County Bank, affirming the strong community ties that keep Elizabethton thriving. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a visitor, this enchanting evening is a fantastic opportunity to gather with friends and family, enjoying the delightful spirit of the season.
So, bring your holiday cheer and join your neighbors in Covered Bridge Park as the Fraser fir lights up the night sky, ushering in the warmth and joy of the holiday season. With heartwarming activities and the magic of Christmas in the air, the Fraser fir tree lighting promises to be an unforgettable keystone of Elizabethton’s holiday celebrations!
