Elizabethton Launches Innovative Financial Literacy Program for High School Students

Elizabethton Welcomes Exciting Financial Training Program for High School Students

In the charming city of Elizabethton, Tennessee, something exciting is happening for high school students that many could only dream of a few years back! Thanks to the dedication of the Northeast Community Credit Union (NCCU), students are gaining invaluable hands-on training in financial literacy right within the walls of their schools.

A First of Its Kind Initiative

The credit union has rolled out a fantastic “school branch” program across all five high schools in Elizabethton/Carter County, including Unaka High School, Elizabethton High School, Cloudland High School, Happy Valley High School, and Hampton High School. Launched in 2018, this initiative was born out of a clear need for local students to gain real-life financial training without placing extra burdens on school staff or budgets. The effort not only aims to provide educational benefit but also encourages students to actively engage with practical life skills.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

So, what exactly do the students get to learn? With a tailored 16-week curriculum developed with the help of personal finance teachers, students delve deep into critical financial concepts. During their time in these in-school branches, students get to grasp essential skills like balancing a checkbook, mastering business etiquette, handling cash, effective job interviewing, and even customer service!

NCCU delivers weekly in-person training throughout the school year, ensuring that students not only understand financial management but also learn practical skills like using online finance tools, shopping wisely for cars, and planning their spending and saving strategies.

Empowering the Next Generation

Bryson Brown, who coordinates the school branches for the credit union, expressed his enthusiasm: “The students are really into this program; teens get excited when they learn something they can apply immediately to their everyday lives.” This excitement sparks a deeper understanding of finances, which is crucial as they transition into adulthood, take on new responsibilities, and ultimately forge their paths toward independence.

As a bonus, students who complete the program receive a certificate from NCCU, marking their achievement as they progress through their education.

Making a Community Impact

The best part? The program comes at no cost to the schools! NCCU fully funds the initiative, allowing schools to focus on education without the stress of financial constraints. Andrea Lewis, the credit union’s Business Development and Event Coordinator, mentioned the broader vision that drives their mission: “By working with students, we hope to help teens overcome unproductive generational patterns.” She highlights the importance of instilling wise financial habits—encouraging students to be intentional with their money and to take pride in their efforts leads to a lasting regional impact.

A Legacy of Support

As a proud member of the Elizabethton community since 1952, the Northeast Community Credit Union has evolved impressively from its humble beginnings as the Elizabethton Teachers Credit Union. Today, it serves individuals across five counties, passionately prioritizing collaboration with local schools and businesses to promote financial literacy and economic development.

The ripple effect of this initiative not only provides students with essential life skills but also enriches the community as a whole. By focusing on young adults, NCCU aims to cultivate a more financially aware generation that can pave the way for a brighter local future.

With this engaging program firmly in place, the students of Elizabethton/Carter County are well on their way to mastering financial literacy, proving that it is never too early to start building a solid foundation—both financially and for their futures.
